SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The Sacramento River Cats opened their 2014 campaign with an 8-3 loss at the hands of the Salt Lake Bees at Smith’s Ballpark on Thursday night.

Salt Lake took an early lead, plating one run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Grant Green, who was the 2012 River Cats team MVP.

Sacramento responded with two runs in the second, highlighted by Jake Goebbert’s RBI double, which brought home new Cats outfielder Kent Matthes. The Bees tied the game in the bottom of the frame, then took the lead for good in the fourth inning.

Matthes scored again, on a Jose Martinez groundout in the seventh, but that was it for the River Cats, who are back at Smith’s Ballpark on Friday for a 5:35 p.m. rematch with Salt Lake.
