Top athletes usually perform their best against the best competition, and that’s exactly what some members of  the Davis High track and field team did over the weekend at the Arcadia Invitational in southern California.

One of the premier track meets in the nation, the event drew thousands of athletes from over 27 states, which gave the Blue Devils an opportunity to test themselves at a level perhaps only duplicated at the CIF state meet.

The strong opposition led to personal-best efforts from three elite DHS boys, with Ian Rock going one better. Rock pole vaulted way past his previous high of 15’6″, jumping an amazing 16’1″ to claim not only a championship at in the Arcadia Invite’s top section, but a new school record.

Davis distance runners Trevor Halsted and Brian De La Mora both ran personal-bests in the seeded section of the 3,200 meters. Halsted lowered his best time by six seconds, placing fifth out of 35 athletes in the race at 9:10.18, and De La Mora wasn’t far behind as he dropped his PR from 9:23.93 to a 9:16.41 and finished 15th.

The rest of the local athletes at Arcadia competed in relays, including the only female Devils to make the trip — Lauren Holtz, Jordan Banwarth, Bailey Gary, and Hannah Krovetz — who ran in the 1,600 sprint medley relay.

Halsted and De La Mora teamed up with Braeden Van Deynze and Mac Harvey to place ninth out of 27 teams in the top section of the boys 4×1,600 relay, with Halsted anchoring the performance with a personal-best split of 4:16.7.

The boys 4 x 400 relay squad also placed ninth in the top section, as Lee LeVerrier, Ryan Banwarth, Rock, and Alec Zavala combined to post a time of 3:24.80. In addition, Zavala and LeVerrier teamed with Kento Okamoto and Alex Chong for the 4 x 100 meter relay.

These great performances should give DHS a ton of momentum going into a busy week of action. The Blue Devils will host Elk Grove on Wednesday at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium for a 3:30 p.m. Delta Valley Conference meet, before staying in town to participate in the high school portion of the annual Woody Wilson Invitational at UC Davis’ Toomey Field.
