Short-handed DHS soccer edges Grant

Coming into Tuesday’s game undermanned, and losing even more players during the match, the Davis High boys soccer team gave everything it had — and the effort paid off in a 1-0 win at Grant.

DHS (11-4-3) improved to 6-0-1 in Delta Valley Conference play. The Devil defense was especially impressive, holding the only league foe to score a goal on the locals — in a 3-3 wind-aided tie on Oct. 3 — scoreless.

Davis’ goal came when junior Raunak Manandhar sent a beautiful free kick into the box and classmate Joe Rainer headed it in past a diving keeper.

With several players hurt or ill, the Blue Devils leaned on sophomores Jaleel Dmeiri and Ricky Gonzalez — recently called up from junior varsity — for big minutes and they delivered.

“We showed a lot of heart and we showed that we are deep, guys came in and really stepped up to the plate,” said DHS coach Alex Park. “Two games left in the season, and right now the most important thing is to get healthy before sections.”
