UC Davis’ Lauren Curry took 87th-ranked Desirae Krawczyk to a third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles, but No. 37 Arizona State eventually finished off a 7-0 women’s tennis victory on Sunday at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe.

The Aggies opened their season last weekend with three straight matches in Arizona, starting with a win over Northern Arizona on Friday before losing to a pair  of nationally ranked schools in No. 29 Arizona on Saturday and the Wildcats (2-0).

On Sunday, Curry bounced back from a 6-3 setback to cruise to a 6-1 victory in the second stanza. The two players were basically even in the third set with Krawczyk just edging out Curry, 7-6 (10-5).

UCD returns to action on Jan. 31 with another road match against a tough opponent. The Aggies will face No. 5 Stanford at the Taube Tennis Center.

Youth soccer

The Davis Alliance Soccer Academy — which offers both competitive and recreational level teams — is holding tryouts for its fall season next month at the Woodland Senior & Community Center, 2001 East St.

Just three years old and growing fast, the Davis Alliance program has practices and games in both Davis and Woodland.

All of the tryouts will take place on Feb. 2 and 3 and players should try out for the age group they will be next fall, though playing up is an option. For tryout times by age group, visit www.davisalliance.org.

Registration cost is $125 per player, which includes practice/game lighting, with an additional cost of $75 plus tax for a club Adidas uniform kit.

No volunteer hour fees are required by parents, but the club is looking for parents who would like to join coaching staffs.
