Chelsea Armstrong scored the game-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining as No. 20 Northwestern used a final rally to turn back upset-minded UC Davis, 5-2, in a nonconference women’s field hockey game played at Cal on Monday.

The loss snapped the Aggies’ three-game winning streak to open the season, moving their record to 3-1. The Wildcats, who also beat No. 11 Stanford, No. 16 Cal and Pacific during their west coast roadtrip, improved to 4-1.

UCD’s Cloey LemMon, named the NorPac West Division Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, tallied a goal and an assist, while Emily Mecke also had a goal. LemMon’s score broke a scoreless tie in the 24th minute while Mecke’s tied the game in the 64th. Aggie goalkeeper Conley Craven added seven saves.

The Wildcats scored their final two goals after UCD pulled Craven in favor of an extra field player.

In addition to LemMon’s NorPac honor, Jamie Garcia was named the West Division’s Rookie of the Week.

UCD men’s soccer

Pat Reese scored his first career goal, putting away the equalizer in the 74th minute, while Omar Zeenni recorded six saves as the Aggies remained unbeaten by battling host Denver to a 1-1 draw on Sunday.

UC Davis improves to 1-0-3 on the year while Denver drops to 0-1-2.

UCD (1-0-3) had held opponents scoreless for 358 minutes until Denver (0-1-2) scored the first goal of Sunday’s game in the 48th minute.

Reese and the Aggies responded in the 74th minute. DHS grad Ryan Gross received the ball on the right side of the field, sent a cross into the box and found Reese waiting, who flicked the ball across his body and found the inside of the left post to tie the game.

UCD women’s soccer

Ashley Edwards scored twice on Sunday, while Lexi Poppoff’s goal 19 seconds into the second half was the eventual game-winner, as the Aggies remained undefeated with a 3-1 nonconference win visiting over San Jose State.

Kiele Argente, Kirstin Holmberg and Poppoff each had assists for UCD (3-0-1).

Quick goals at the start of each half ignited the Aggies, and goalie Taylor Jern made four saves.

Paralympics

The United States wheelchair basketball team — which features Davis High graduate Joe Chambers playing in his second paralympic games — finished in a tie for second in Group A as preliminary play ended on Monday.

After falling to Australia, 65-49, on Sunday, the Americans rebounded to hold off Spain, 63-55, on Monday to reach the bracket play.

Chambers didn’t play much against Spain after tallying six points and an assist on Sunday for Team USA, who plays on Wednesday against Germany.
