A meeting for all players interested in playing all levels of Davis High football next fall, and their parents, is scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the DHS library.

The talk is mandatory and will outline the program’s academic, behavioral, community and football-related expectations for parents and players as well as introducing a schedule of events for 2013, including the offseason program, and the 2013 Player/Parent Handbook.

Head coach Steve Smyte urges all families interested in being a part of the emerging Devil program to attend.

In 2012, DHS went 5-5 in the rugged Delta Valley Conference and narrowly missed a postseason berth.

DHS girls soccer

An information meeting for ninth- and 10th-grade players regarding the tryout process for the 2013 spring season of Blue Devil girls soccer is set for Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in room N-8 at DHS. Parents are welcome to attend.

A separate meeting for 11th- and 12th- graders will be held at a later date.

The tryouts for the younger players is scheduled to begin with conditioning on Feb. 1. Check-in that day begins at 4 p.m.

All sports participation and physical forms must be completed and submitted to the DHS athletic department office and complete baseline concussion testing prior to taking part in the tryouts. Players must also obtain a clearance card and an emergency information card from the athletic department, which should be brought to the first day of trouts.

DYSA softball

Registration for the Davis Youth Softball Association’s spring season is still open, and families who sign up before Friday, Jan. 25 will avoid a late fee.

To register, visit www.davisyouthsoftball.org and follow the instructions for the 2013 Spring Registration program.

Players that get a friend to sign-up will receive a free glitter headband on Opening Day. After the friend registers, send families should send an email indicating their name and the name of the friend to [email protected] to get the headband.

Field hockey club

The NorCal Lights, a club field hockey program led by Davis High coach Sandie Marotti-Huckins, will begin practices on Sunday.

The club is open to players from throughout the region and the teams will play in tournaments in the area.

Along with U16 and U19 squads, a new junior program is available for players 10-12 years old.

Registration is $450 for upper-division girls, $300 for juniors.

Indoor and outdoor practices are expected, with the first session set for Sunday from 9-11 a.m. at DHS. Mandatory check-in starts at 8:15 a.m.

Youth rugby

The Davis High School boys Rugby Club is recruiting players for the upcoming season, which begins this month.

Local athletes in grades nine through 12 are encouraged to come out and try the sport, as varsity and frosh/soph teams are each being formed. The club is especially looking for ninth-graders and no experience is necessary.

Registration fees can be paid after an athlete has tried a few practices and decide he wants to play. January practices are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Halden Field.

Safety, fun and competition are emphasized by the coaching staff, which is headed by former USA National 7’s and UC Davis rugby coach Steve Gray.

According to team officials, no athlete is too small or too big to play rugby and the sport features very specific tackling restrictions to keep players safe.
