ELK GROVE — The Davis High girls tennis team won all three doubles matches and five of six singles encounters on Tuesday — rolling past Elk Grove, 8-1, in a Delta Valley Conference contest — but it was the only loss that may have been the most noteworthy.

Playing at No. 1 singles, Blue Devil junior Cat Paw U went back and forth with Herd standout Ashley Stone before falling 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

“Cat had a very positive outlook on the result, feeling that it had been a great learning experience to be under that kind of intense pressure, that fighting through it made her a better player for the future,” said DHS fill-in coach Brett Stone. “That is surely the maturity of a true champion.”

In another tight match, the Devils’ No. 2 doubles squad — sophomore Katherine Murdoch and senior Cat Archer — rebounded from a poor opening set to show some great skill in winning 7-6 (9-7), 6-2.

Stone said the “flawless second set featured monster net play by Murdoch and an endless barrage of well-placed forehands by Archer.”

The other matches were more routine for Davis, with singles wins coming from No. 2 Kailynn Yang (6-1, 6-2), No. 3 Angela Donahue (6-4, 6-0), No. 4 Lauren Duan (6-1, 6-0), No. 5 Jenna Mould (6-0, 6-3) and No. 6 Marlena Angermann (6-0, 6-2).

Megan Ewens and Angela Fleming won, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles and Elena Neale-Sacks and Sherry Zheng earned a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 3.

UCD men’s golf

Fueled by a spectacular 6-under 66 from Mike Brockington and Matt Hansen’s stellar 68 on Tuesday, the Aggies had the best team score of the day and jumped four spots to finish second at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at Sonoma Golf Club.

UCD, ranked No. 79 by Golfstat, posted an 11-under 277 in the final round, the best score among the 16 teams by four strokes. That stirring finish vaulted them from a sixth-place tie into sole possession of second place, ahead of ranked teams like No. 21 Arizona State and No. 46 BYU, which tied for fifth. The Aggies ended at 17-under.

Hansen and Brockington led three UCD golfers in the top 20 and four in the top 30. Hansen’s 2-under 68 put him fourth overall while Brockington tied with teammate Ben Corfee for 18th. Corfee, from El Macero, had a final-round 73, the same score as Aggie Luke Vivolo, who tied for 27th. Jonny Baxter finished his tournament impressively, tying for 45th with a 70.

“This was the third tournament we’ve been in position to have a great finish and (Tuesday) we got it done,” said UCD head coach Cy Williams. “This team needs all five players to step up and shoot low and Brock did that. That was the key for us. And obviously, Hansen had a strong tournament from start to finish. He was our rock.”

Next, the Aggies travel to Stockton for the Pacific Invitational Oct. 31-Nov. 2. It is the final tournament of UCD’s fall schedule.
