Sports briefs: Former Blue Devil breaks a school record at Swarthmore
SWARTHMORE, Pa. — Davis High graduate Rebecca Hammond, now a sophomore, broke the school 800-meter record on Saturday when she posted a time of 2:13.44 to lead Swarthmore College at the Tuppany Twilight Last Chance Track & Field Meet.
Hammond delighted the home fans by taking 13th place in a field of 34 runners in Divisions I-III. The former Blue Devil’s time provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Division III Championships.
The record-breaking performance capped off an exceptional month for Hammond, who earned a gold medal at the 2011 Centennial Conference Championship Meet last week as the anchor of the 4×800 team (9:23.18) and a silver medal in the 1,500 (4:42.20). She also was selected as a member of the conference’s Academic Honor Roll.
UCD baseball
After making his only start of the season last Tuesday, Aggie senior left-handed pitcher Scott Chew was named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance.
Chew pitched a complete game shutout to give UCD a 5-0 win over Santa Clara. Prior to that contest, Chew had appeared in only five games and a thrown just 3 2/3 innings.
The Milpitas native gave up only four hits and did not allow an extra-base hit until giving up a double in the top of the ninth inning. He faced only one batter over the minimum as the Aggies turned two double plays, picked off a runner and caught another runner attempting to steal. Chew threw only 92 pitches in the game and held the Broncos hitless until the fourth inning.
UCD begins a four-game homestand Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. when it hosts Cal at Dobbins Stadium.
UCD women’s basketball
Matt Klemin, most recently on the women’s basketball staff at Vanguard University, has been named an assistant coach under new Aggie mentor Jennifer Gross.
Klemin joins the staff after spending the past two seasons at Vanguard (in Southern California), where he helped direct the Lions’ defense, served as recruiting coordinator and prepared scouting reports.
His tenure at Vanguard followed one season at Azusa Pacific University and two years at Cal Baptist where he was involved in all aspects of the two NAIA programs. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Cal Poly in 2004-06.
