Seven UC Davis women’s water polo players — including Davis High graduate Dakota Mohr — earned recognition on the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches Association’s All-Academic rolls in a Monday announcement.
Aggie freshman Hannah Curran and Katie Schlueter were selected in the Outstanding (GPA of 3.71-4.0) category, senior Ashley Chandler and junior Alicia Began appeared in the Superior (3.41-3.70) classification; while junior Kaylee Miller, sophomore Riane Woods and Mohr, a junior, were in the Excellent (3.20-3.40) category.
To be eligible for ACWPC All-Academic recognition, a student-athlete also must have competed in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.
Chandler, an English major who also represented UCD as the Big West Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in March, picked up her fourth ACWPC academic award. She first earned the honor in 2007. This marks the third award for Began and Mohr, while 2011 represents the second straight year that Schlueter has earned the honor.
An annual tradition in the Davis running community, the Golden Valley Harriers Labor Day Race is now in its 16th year.
The event, which has started and finished at the Davis Commons shopping center for the past four years and was created by Davis Fleet Feet and GVH, features a 10K run, a 5K run/walk and a 1K kids fun run. The race is now solely organized and staffed by the 125-member running club and is a nonprofit event.
The course winds through the flat and fast greenbelts and bike paths of South Davis. A unique feature of the race is the partnership with Davis’ sister city — Inuyama, Japan — which will send up to 12 runners to join the more than 750 expected participants.
The 5K and 10K races start at 8 a.m. Monday, Sept. 5, and the kids run begins at 9:30 a.m. Proceeds from the event benefit local running programs, including Davis High, Woodland High and Dixon High cross country squads, and Team Davis for athletes with special needs. The event raised more than $11,300 for these local programs in 2010 and has donated more than $61,000 to those group over the past six years.
Registration is available at www.goldenvalleyharriers.org and in person at Davis Commons, First and E streets, on Labor Day weekend.
The city of Davis is offering adult golf classes this fall for beginners and intermediate-level players ages 21 and older.
Held at Wildhorse Golf Course, 2323 Rockwell Drive, the classes are taught by instructors Ken Sawizky and Jack Kitterman, who have developed a program to teach the fundamentals of the swing, the short game, putting, rules and on-course etiquette.
Weekday and weekend slots are available as the classes will go from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays, Sept. 10 through Oct. 15, or Tuesdays and Thursdays, from Sept. 13 through 29.
The cost is $90 and players can register at the city of Davis Community Services office, 23 Russell Blvd., or online at www.cityofdavis.org. There is a $20 materials fee payable to the instructor on the first day of class to cover balls, equipment and cart rental.
