Davis High cross country runner Fiona O’Keeffe tried her best to power through a sore hip on Saturday at the Foot Locker National Championships.

Unfortunately, after running two miles of the Balboa Park course in San Diego, the fantastic freshman had to stop. Still, by starting the race, she became just the second Blue Devil ever to appear at the national event.

Though she was unable to finish the race, O’Keeffe capped a great season by reaching the nationals, an accomplishment she now shares with former DHS star Laurynne Chetelat, who went in 2007.

O’Keeffe qualified with a fifth-place finish in the West Regional race at Mount SAC on Dec. 1, crossing in 18:33.

The Devil standout also took fifth at last month’s CIF State Championships and won the Sac-Joaquin Section individual title by a 14-second margin.

Little League

Davis Little League registration is now open for the spring season. Little League is open to boys and girls ages 4-14 (based on player’s age as of April 30, 2013).

DLL has levels from Tee-ball to Juniors and serves nearly 1,000 Davis players each season. Register at http://davislittleleague.org/index.php.

Costs are $100 for Tee-ball; $155 for Farm ball, AA, AA and Majors; and $250 for Juniors. Late fees apply on and after Jan. 1.

DHS volleyball

Though neither team is in season during the winter, Davis High boys and girls volleyball coach Julie Crawford has events planned for all of her Blue Devil netters.

For prospective DHS boys team members, conditioning and open gym time starts in January leading up to tryouts, which begin Feb. 4.

Players must have physical exams and concussion screening completed prior to tryouts.

For girls in grades eight through 12 interested in playing Devil volleyball, an offseason training program begins on Jan. 8 at the Fitness Garage, 1403 Fifth St., Suite G.

The program meets Tuesday and Thursdays and players can either come from 3 to 4 p.m. or 4 to 5 p.m.

For more information, contact Crawford at jcrawford@djusd.net.

Spring lacrosse

Registration for all Davis Lacrosse Association spring teams is now open at www.davislax.org.

In the sport’s primary season, the DLA will have teams for boys and girls in multiple age groups. Practices start by early February and games will be played from March through May.

Registration costs $275 to $400 per player, with scholarship assistance available, players must obtain their own equipment and each athlete must be a member of U.S. Lacrosse for a $25 annual fee.
