When Davis High boys water polo coach Tracy Stapleton saw his team give up 10 goals on Thursday and barely slip past St. Mary’s, he was frustrated because he knew his defense was capable of playing much better.
Just one day later, at the Capital Classic tournament, the Blue Devils proved their coach right.
DHS gave up 16 goals total in winning all three of its games — beating El Toro (8-6), Clovis (13-3) and San Ramon Valley (8-7) — at the weekend event to improve to 16-4.
Garrett Fisk and Graham Fullerton paced the Devils as each scored eight times in the three wins, while Zac Anderson was the only other local player to get a goal in each contest.
In the blowout victory over Clovis, Valente Dolcini found the net four times for Davis, with Cameron Wright tallying twice and Conrad McCarthy scoring a goal. Tyler Ujifusa and Nick Masson added single goals against El Toro, while goalie Jeff Stark was strong all tournament.
“We allowed a total of 16 goals in three games against excellent competition, which shows a great improvement in our defense,” Stapleton said. “We now need to carry this forward and be this strong on defense consistently.”

Four birdies in Sunday’s final round helped the Aggies’ Betty Chen win medalist honors by two shots while the 41st-ranked Aggies dominated the rest of the field for a 16-shot win at the Hoosier Fall Invitational hosted by Indiana University.
Chen had a 2-under 69 in the third round after posting that same score in the second to finish at 3-under 210 overall, winning by two strokes over Carmen Laguna (-1) of Minnesota. They were the only two competitors in the 96-player field to finish under par.
UCD shot 4-over 288s in the final two rounds and had three other players among the top 14 places as freshman Paige Lee tied for sixth at 4-over, senior Jessica Chulya was 13th at 7-over and Andrea Wong tied for 14th at 8-over. Aggie senior Beverly Vatananugulkit tied for 42nd at 17-over.
