May 5, 2011 |

If it wasn’t for a matchup against the top seed in the singles portion of the Sac Joaquin Individual Boys Tennis Tournament — a contest where Davis High’s Robert Lipman won the first set before falling 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 to Jesuit’s Suresh Eswaran — the Blue Devils would have all four of its qualifying players still alive through Day 1.

Winning two matches each on Thursday, second-seeded singles competitor Glenn Hull, of DHS, and the Devil doubles team of Paul Klavins and Russell Richardson will play in the semifinals today at the Laguna Racquet Club.

In singles action, Hull started off by defeating Lincoln’s Jonathan Sievers, 6-2, 6-0. The Delta Valley Conference singles champion then battled Jimmy Giovanini of Oak Ridge and emerged victorious, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

Lipman took down Tokay’s Lawrence Valdez, 6-1, 6-2 before falling to Eswaran.

competing in the doubles section of the event, Klavins and Richardson beat Jimmy Pillos/Zach Hamman of Modesto, 6-1, 6-0, then got past Jesuit’s Avery Moore/Miles Flam, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

DHS girls lacrosse

In their penultimate regular season game of the year, the the Blue Devils went on the road and pounded Northgate, 23-5.

Twelve different players scored for DHS, which will be back on their home field Friday, hosting Piedmont at 7 p.m. on Senior Night.

Against the Broncos, Ashley Pugh and Mari Cajandig scored four goals each, Kelly Chuck had three and Lauren Blackwell, Laurel Darragh and Caron Miller added two each. Single goals were netted by Samantha Fung, Kylie Drexel, Christina Son, Monica Berry, Erin Chavanne and defender Kelsey Ewing, whose three career goals have all been scored against Northgate.

Kiki Tanaka led the Devils with three assists, Berry and Drexel had two and Darragh and Chavanne had one apiece.

Ewing, Cece Cajandig and Lani Chang powered the Davis defense and goalkeepers Briki Cajandig (two saves) and Kelly Richmond (one) were stingy.

UCD track and field

Aggie senior Caitlin Fitzgerald won the most recent Big West Women’s Track Athlete of the Week award, after setting a school record in the steeplechase last weekend at Stanford.

Fitzgerald, from Palmdale, finished fourth in her section of the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10 minutes, 26.16 seconds at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational, breaking Heather Gibson’s record of 10:31.65 that stood since 2002.

Fitzgerald’s mark ranks her second in the Big West and 22nd in the west region. She also earned the honor after setting a PR during the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge in April.

Local golf

Several local players excelled on Monday, when the 2011 State Amateur Golf Tournament was held at the El Macero Country Club.

Playing on his home course against 80 of the region’s top amateur golfers, Ben Corfee — a junior at Jesuit who lives in El Macero — finished in the top 10, which comes with a berth in the upcoming state tournament. Corfee shot a 73 (34 on the front, then 39 on the back) to finish just three shots behind the winner, Lucas Delgado from Chico.

Other local notables participants were, Wes Leith, whose a 75 put him in a tie for 13, DHS senior Scott Raber (78, tied for 33rd) , Woodland High standout Will Scarlett (79 , T41), El Macero’s Dan Corfee and 2011 Davis City Champion Peter Lansburgh, who both posted a 80s to tie for 52nd place.

Raber, will play golf for Chico State next year, while Scarlett will compete for UCD.
