There was good news and bad news for the UC Davis men’s basketball this week as freshman Brynton Lemar earned national recognition, but it was announced that junior J.T. Adenrele will miss the 2013-14 season with an injury.

Adenrele hurt his left knee while performing a non-contact drill at a recent workout.

The 6-foot-7 forward from Roseville saw action in all 31 games for the Aggies last season, averaging 12.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. His play was a big reason why UCD won 10 more games than it had the year before, one of the top 10 improvements in all of Division I.

“I feel bad for J.T., but based on his work ethic and personality, I have no doubt that he will turn the adversity of this injury into a positive experience,” said UCD head coach Jim Les. “J.T.’s absence will also provide an opportunity for his teammates to show their true character.”

One player who could help fill the void is Lemar, a point guard, who was selected as one of five freshmen to watch by ESPN’s Myron Medcalf in a recent espn.com article.

Recruited by numerous schools from across the country, Lemar will don an Aggie uniform for the first time this season.

In addition to helping St. Augustine High School capture a state title with its seven-point victory at Sleep Train Arena last March, the 6-foot-3 San Diego native also received a litany of awards throughout his final season with the Saints.

What started with a Division III San Diego CIF championship, continued with a Southern California Division III Sectional crown, MVP honors and culminated with San Diego All-CIF First Team, Postseason Player of the Year and San Diego CIF Player of the Year accolades.

“It was exciting to end my high school career with a championship,” Lemar said earlier this year. “I am ready to work hard, compete against other teams at the Division I level and help the Aggies succeed.”

Little League fall ball

Davis Little League is accepting registration for fall baseball for kids age-appropriate for AA-, AAA-, majors- and juniors level competition.

Early bird sign-ups, which go through Friday, are $95. From Saturday through Sept. 3, getting into DLL fall ball will cost $125.

There are no farm or T-ball teams.

For the first time, all registration must be completed online at https://davislittleleague.sportssignup.com. For additional help, call Karen Yoon at 530-756-1463. For questions regarding juniors play, contact Steve Olney at [email protected]

Wildcats golf tournament

A golf tournament to raise money for the NorCal Wildcats youth basketball program is set for Friday at El Macero Country Club.

The outing, which begins with golf at 1 p.m. followed by dinner and a silent auction at 6 p.m., is the major fundraising event of the year for the organization.

The NorCal Wildcats are a nonprofit competitive AAU basketball club that has grown to more than 20 teams featuring approximately 300 players in grades four through 12 from local communities such as Davis, Dixon Winters, Woodland, Sacramento and Vacaville. Athletes from as far away as San Francisco, Los Angeles and Fresno also have joined the club.

The club has recently added programs such as the Junior Wildcats — for players ages 4 to 9 — and the NorCal Wildcats Elite teams for highly skilled players.

Interested golfers can register for the tournament at www.davishoops.com and sponsorships also are available by contacting Karen Ward at [email protected] or 530-219-8873.
