Sports briefs: UCD’s Craven plays well in field hockey loss

A NorPac West Defensive Player of the Week performance from UC Davis goalkeeper Conley Craven wasn’t quite enough for the Aggies as Kelley Harrison scored with under six minutes remaining on Sunday to help Brown University edge the locals, 3-2 on Sunday in Providence, R.I.

Brown (1-1) came back from a 2-1 deficit to come out ahead, despite UCD goals from Amanda Marinac and Carly Schoch. Lydia Brambila had an assist for the Aggies (1-1).

Craven, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., played all 70 minutes in the cage for UCD, stopping 10 of 13 shots on goal. She had four saves in the first half and turned back six of seven shots in the second to win the Aggies’ first weekly conference award this season.

Despite a long day of travel on Saturday and an early start on Sunday, the Aggies — who were playing for the first time since downing Pacific on Aug. 26 — didn’t trail for the first 64 minutes of the game. They led 1-0 and 2-1, only to have the Bears rally to tie the score each time.

UCD took the first four shots of the game, finally converting in the 10th minute when Brambila shot and Marinac deflected it in for a 1-0 lead. Later, Schoch’s unassisted goal, the first of her Aggie career, gave UCD a 2-1 advantage. But Brown tied the game just before halftime.

The teams combined for 18 shots after the break, but Harrison was able to provide the only goal with 5:49 left.

The Aggies will continue their roadtrip on Tuesday when they visit Bryan University for a 4 p.m. nonconference game.

UCD women’s soccer

Lisa Kemp had a goal and an assist and Lexi Poppoff had two assists on Sunday, as the Aggies defeated San Jose State, 5-2, at Spartan Stadium.

Allison Kelly, Ashley Edwards, Taylor Duffner and Davis High graduate Elise Winbrock also scored for UCD (3-1), while Anna Quigley also collected an assist.

The Aggies scored twice in the game’s first 26 minutes and led 2-1 at halftime before scoring a pair of goals within a three-minute span in the second half to forge a 4-1 advantage. The Spartans (0-5) cut the deficit in half before Duffner scored in the 86th minute for the final margin.

UCD outshot San Jose State 10-4 overall, scoring twice on four shots in the first half. The Spartans had only two shots on goal. Kelly got the Aggies on the scoreboard first, collecting a pass from Kemp in the 21st minute on a give-and-go transition, then beating her defender with a shot to the left side of the net.

Edwards later took a through pass from Poppoff 20 yards out and dribbled into the box where she converted on a low shot in the first half, before the second-half scoring flurry by UCD put the game out of reach. Kemp put in a penalty shot after being fouled in the box in the 48th minute, Winbrock rebounded Poppoff’s crossing kick after it was deflected by the Spartans keeper in the 51st minute and Quigley a sent through pass into the box, which Duffner rolled in for a score.

The Aggies posted their highest goal total since scoring six at Eastern Washington in 2009.

“Our focus this week was on finishing our chances and (Sunday) we were clinical in the attacking third,” said UCD coach Maryclaire Robinson. “I’m very proud of how we managed their pressure, possessed the ball and finished. It was a breakout game and fantastic to see five different players find the back of the net.”

UCD next hosts Creighton on Friday at 5 p.m. and UNLV on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Davis Water Polo Club

The DWPC is offering a fall session for young water polo players beginning this week. The workouts will be Tuesdays and Thursdays at Schaal Aquatics Center and the session runs for eight weeks.

Golf classes

The city of Davis is offering adult golf classes this fall for beginners and intermediate-level players ages 21 and older.

Held at Wildhorse Golf Course, 2323 Rockwell Drive, the classes are taught by instructors Ken Sawizky and Jack Kitterman, who have developed a program to teach the fundamentals of the swing, the short game, putting, rules and on-course etiquette.

Weekday and weekend slots are available as the classes will go from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays, this week through Oct. 15, or Tuesdays and Thursdays, from Sept. 13-29.

The cost is $90 and players can register at the city of Davis Community Services office, 23 Russell Blvd., or online at www.cityofdavis.org. There is a $20 materials fee payable to the instructor on the first day of class to cover balls, equipment and cart rental.

For information, call the Community Services Department at (530) 757-5626.

Synchronized swimming

Davis AquaStarz synchronized swim team will offer a beginning synchronized swim class this fall, open to all swimmers ages 6 to 18 who are comfortable in deep water and able to swim at least one lap of freestyle and backstroke.

The class will meet on Sundays at Arroyo Pool from 3 to 4:30 p.m. beginning this weekend and continuing through Oct. 2. For more information or to enroll, email [email protected] or visit www.aquastarz.org.

Chamber golf tourney

Golfers are invited to save the date — Friday, Sept. 16 — for the annual Davis Chamber of Commerce golf tournament. The event will take place on a Friday this year instead of Monday, and the price has been reduced by $30, to $120 per player.

The tournament, to be played at Wildhorse Golf Course, features lunch followed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Contests for putts, longest drive, closest to the pin and hole in one are planned. Dinner, awards, entertainment and a raffle follow the tournament.

For more information, call the Chamber at (530) 756-5160.

Lacrosse clinic

The Davis Lacrosse Association will host two free clinics this month for boys and girls in grades 2 through 8. The clinics are Sunday, Sept. 18 and Sunday, Sept 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Northstar Park.

Participants must pre-register online at www.davislax.org by clicking on the “Register Online” tab.

No equipment is required but athletes should bring water and wear comfortable clothing.

In addition, the Davis Lacrosse Association is always looking for experienced coaches. Contact Don Aiello at (530) 750-3892 for more information.

Foxy’s Fall Century

Registration for the Foxy’s Fall Century bike ride — scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 15 — is now open.

Cyclists can go to www.davisbikeclub.org to register for one of the three courses offered: a 100-mile endurance ride, a 60-mile workout and a 30-mile ride to Winters and back that offers fun for the whole family. Snacks, lunch and a post-ride meal are included.
