UC Davis women’s soccer goalkeeper Taylor Jern was named the inaugural Big West Defensive Player of the Week  for the 2013 season on Monday.

The junior from Corona played all 90 minutes in the Aggies’ season opener against visiting Sacramento State on Friday. In addition to helping UCD extend its unbeaten streak against its Causeway Classic rivals to seven seasons, Jern also picked up her second career shutout.

Jern only recorded one save against the Hornets, but it came at a crucial point of the match as she redirected a point-blank attempt to keep Sac State from tying the score at one apiece.

She is the first Aggie to receive weekly accolades from the Big West since Lisa Kemp was named Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 12, 2011.

UCD men’s soccer

After competing against one another for the full 110 minutes on Sunday at Aggie Soccer Field, neither the Aggies nor Chico State could find the net in an exhibition match the ended in a scoreless draw.

UCD will begin regular season competition Friday at the University of Portland Tournament, against the host Pilots. Kickoff at Harry A. Merlo Field in Portland, Ore., is at 7 p.m.

“I am happy with the way that we played… especially against a veteran team like Chico State,” said Aggie coach Dwayne Shaffer. “When I talked with him (former Aggie and current Chico State head coach Felipe Restrepo) after the match, I found out that he had a large senior class that has seven players who are 23 or older.”

The oldest player on UCD’s roster, one that features 15 underclassmen, is 22.

The Aggies fired 15 of their 17 shots in regulation but were thwarted by a handful of diving saves from Chico State goalkeepers James Stroud and Sam Evans.

Notwithstanding a flurry of action that took place in front of its own net in the final minutes of overtime, UCD’s backline was able to stifle the Wildcats throughout the entire afternoon.

In that second overtime, Aggie goalkeeper Armando Quezada — who entered the match prior to the first extra session — recorded two saves. Quezada replaced starter Omar Zeenni to earn a split of the shutout.

Two-time Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year Barbara Jahn announced the Aggies’ 2013-14 schedule this week, a slate that features three home dual meets.

UCD will host Fresno State (Jan. 12) plus league foes UC Santa Barbara (Jan. 24) and Loyola Marymount (Jan. 26) at the Schaal Aquatics Center this season.

Jahn’s 39th season at the helm begins on Oct. 19 at the Pacific Invitational. The Aggies are looking to defend their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation swimming and diving title and capture their third league championships in four seasons.

The MPSF Championships begin on Feb. 19 while the NCAA Finals are March 20 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

DHS field hockey

The Blue Devils dominated a preseason jamboree last weekend, opening their season with six shutouts wins and one tie.

The deadlock — a 1-1 outing against Eastern Athletic League rival Chico — featured the only goal DHS allowed all weekend.

Meanwhile, the Blue Devil offense scored 13 goals in the seven contests.
