Sports briefs: UCD’s new league has a new logo

With four new members — including football-only competitor UC Davis — joining the conference beginning this season, the Big Sky has used the opportunity to begin a branding campaign that includes a new logo, unveiled Monday.

“A dream finally came true with the rebranding of the Big Sky Conference,’’ said league commissioner Doug Fullerton. “We have a fresh and exciting new logo, new colors and a new league mentality.”

Each Big Sky institution is uniquely connected to the new logo, as it has been designed in the official colors of all 13 schools.

The branding process will continue through 2013-14 when the league celebrates its 50th anniversary, and the 25th anniversary of sponsoring women’s sports.

Women’s water polo

Two Davis High graduates competing at UC Davis and another who plays water polo at Wagner College in Staten Island, N.Y., were honored when last week when the Association of Collegiate Women’s Water Polo Coaches made All-Academic choices.

Former Blue Devils Elise Fullerton and Dakota Mohr earned recognition for the Aggies while DHS grad Michelle Greenough was one of Wagner’s representatives.

In all, eight members of the UCD squad and  program at large earned All-Academic accolades. The honor roll features three classifications: Outstanding (3.71-4.0), Superior (3.41-3.70) and Excellent (3.20-3.40).

Senior Alicia Began, junior Katie Schlueter, sophomore Hannah Curran and freshman Fullerton each made the Superior category for UCD, while seniors Mohr and Kaylee Miller, junior Riane Woods and sophomore Erin Schlueter garnered nods in the Excellent category.

This marks the fourth All-Academic award for seniors Mohr and Began. Miller and Katie Schlueter each picked up their third honor, while Woods nabbed her second. It also represents the second straight year that Curran posted the team’s highest GPA. Curran is a civil engineering major from Martinez.

To be eligible for ACWPC All-Academic recognition, a student-athlete must have competed in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests and hold a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. (Note: due to the submission deadline, the 2012 spring quarter was not included in computing the UCD honorees’ scores.)

Collectively, the Aggies — who finished 18-13 overall with a 4-1 record in the Big West and were ranked in the top 10 on two different occasions — compiled a team grade-point average of 3.17, 17th among all collegiate teams.

Greenough’s squad, Wagner College, had a cumulative GPA of 3.515, the top number in the country, edging out second-place Harvard.

Freshman Greenough was one of six Seahawks placing in the Outstanding category.

Raber gets a win

Davis High graduate Tyler Raber, a senior at UCD, held off Iowa’s Steven Ihm by a single shot with a final round score of 1-over 72 to win the 109th Trans-Mississippi Championship last Thursday at Oak Tree National in Edmond, Okla.

Since its founding in 1901, the Trans-Miss Championship has grown to become one of the premier amateur golf events in the nation.

Raber led the field after his first two rounds, posting scores of 70 and then an impressive 65 to move to seven-under. He was tied for second after a tough third round the included five bogeys and just one birdie, but he returned to his steady shooting in the final round of the tournament to set up his spectacular finish.

Raber’s birdie on the second hole of the back nine, followed by six straight pars, sealed his victory over Ihm and the rest of the field.

Matt Seramin and incoming freshman Ben Corfee, who is from Davis but prepped at Jesuit, also represented the Aggies at the event.
