Strong all-around volleyball outing for DHS boys

When the season started, the Davis High boys volleyball team knew what it had in seniors Dan Bonetti and Sam Manderfield, but after that it was a matter of seeing which of its younger, more inexperienced players would step up.

Now, with just two matches remaining in the regular season, the Blue Devils are a much more balanced team — and they showed it in Thursday’s 25-9, 25-11, 25-15 Delta Valley Conference victory at Laguna Creek.

DHS played a strong all-around game as Evan Meerscheidt and Jake deVarennes set the tone up from — leading the Devils in kills — and Milton Hong and Richard Lu showed great passing and serving on the back line.

“The boys played consistent and solid,” Davis head coach Julie Crawford said. “We hit well, we hustled and were pretty good at the net. We also served well.”

The Blue Devils are hoping to carry that momentum in Tuesday’s home match against Monterey Trail. Not just a big DVC matchup as the teams jockey for playoff position, but the contest also serves as DHS’ senior night. The ball goes in the air at 5 p.m. at The Cage.
