Solid team play — led by junior Beverly Vatananugulkit — bolstered the UC Davis women’s golf squad, placing the Aggies firmly in sixth place at the Edean Ihlanffeldt Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington at the Sahalee Country Club.
Vatananugulkit, who was third entering the day, finished the 54-hole tournament at 1-over 217 while the No. 36 Aggies shot a collective 20-over 308 in the final round. Sophomores Betty Chen and Andrea Wong both shot 77s, finishing in ties for 26th and 34th, respectively, while freshman Paige Lee tied for 41st after posting a 79. Senior Jessica Chulya carded a 78 and tied for 43rd.
Eleventh-ranked Stanford had a 7-over 295 in the final round and was 1-under 863 for the week, winning the 13-team tournament by 27 shots over top-ranked Washington (890).
Vatananugulkit had a season-best finish with her Pacific Northwest performance. Sparked by eight pars and a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole, she finished the front nine a shot below par. She was 4-over on the back.
Vatananugulkit opened the tournament with impressive rounds of 70 and 71, respectively, on Tuesday. Mariah Stackhouse of Stanford was first at 7-under.
Chen had a steady front nine on Wednesday, picking up a birdie, seven pars and just one bogey to play the stretch even. Wong matched Chen’s 77 by covering her final nine holes only one shot above par, which included a birdie on the par-4 16th hole.
Lee was just 3 over on her back nine to highlight her day while Chulya also birdied the 16th hole to help spark her round.
