HONOLULU, Hawaii — Sydnee Fipps scored 18 points and combined with Alyson Doherty to key a second-half comeback attempt, but Hawaii held on for a 59-48 Big West Conference women’s basketball win on Thursday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Fipps had 10 points after intermission and Doherty added 11 of her 13 in the second half as the Aggies (10-13, 5-7) outscored the Rainbow Wahine (12-11, 8-4) by nine points.
But it wasn’t enough to overcome a first half in which UCD made just 22 percent from the floor and trailed 34-14 heading into the break.
Still, the Aggies outscored their hosts, 13-6, over the first 11 minutes of the second half before Hawaii was able to stop the threat.
“Our production improved a lot in the second half but unfortunately we couldn’t close the gap,” said UCD head coach Jennifer Gross. “We are going to learn from our mistakes tonight, keep improving, and be ready to compete on Saturday.”
The Rainbow Wahine outrebounded the Aggies, 39-26, and got four 3-pointers and 20 points from guard Monica DeAngelis
UCD will finish its weekend road trip with a 2 p.m. Big West game on Saturday at Cal State Northridge.
