AUBURN, Ala. — Luke Vivolo fired four birdies on his way to a 1-under 71 and a tie for fourth place in Thursday’s opening round of the NCAA Auburn Regional, helping the UC Davis men’s golf team into ninth place.

The Aggies shot a 12-over 300 and were tied with Sam Houston State, 13 strokes behind leader Alabama at the Auburn University Club. The top five teams will advance to the NCAA finals.

Also for UCD, Matt Hansen and Ben Corfee, from El Macero, each carded a 75 in the opening rounds and were tied for 28th, Nicolas Noya finished with a 79 and was tied for 58th and Joshua Granger was tied for 72nd after shooting an 83.

Just 10 golfers in the 14-team, 75-player field broke par in the first round, including Vivolo, who finds himself just two shots out of the lead.

Starting on the 10th hole, the Aggie sophomore had a birdie on the par-5 12th and added five pars and a bogey to make his turn even. Vivolo then birdied the par-4 first hole, and the par-5 fourth and seventh holes to counter a pair of bogeys and shoot 71.

Corfee had a scrambling 75, collecting seven birdies along with eight bogeys and a double-bogey to go with just two pars.

The 54-hole tournament was set to continue with Round 2 on Friday.
