Spencer Clayton, a 6-foot-10 post player from Mt. Hood Community College in Washington, and Clint Bozner, a 6-8 forward most recently from L.A. Trade-Tech College, have signed national letters of intent with the UC Davis men’s basketball program and will join the Aggies for next season according to head coach Jim Les.

“Our staff in the spring wanted to add athleticism and size to our program and with Clint and Spencer we can say our goal was accomplished in a big way,” Les said. “We love the quality and character of both these student-athletes and we expect them to contribute to our program immediately.”

Clayton graduated in 2006 from Camas High in Washington, where he averaged 12 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks per game during his senior season to earn All-Greater Saint Helen’s League honors.

He’s played the past two years at Mt. Hood Community College where he was first-team All-Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges and his league’s MVP. He averaged 14.2 ppg and 10.5 rpg and shot 60 percent from the field last season. Clayton, who also has served an LDS mission, is an Eagle Scout.

“Spencer is a skilled low-post player who can score with his back to the basket as well as rebound,” said Les. “He is also an excellent passer.”

Bozner graduated from Villa Park High (Southern California) in 2010 and spent last season at L.A. Trade-Tech where he was an All-South Coast Conference first-team honoree. While at Villa Park, he was a three-year member of the varsity who averaged a double-double with 16 ppg and 10 rpg as a senior. He also dished four assists per game.

Bozner was named a McDonald’s All-America nominee, was selected to the All-Century League first team in 2006 and played in various all-star games. He also was a four-year honor roll member in high school and attended the Reebok Breakout Camp.

“Clint is an explosive athlete who can run the floor and play above the rim,” said Les. “He is a physical rebounder who can also score in a variety of ways.”

The pair adds to a talented recruiting class as Darius Graham, a 5-10 point guard from Sacramento High, Tyler Ott, a 6-5 forward from Desert Hills High in Utah., and 6-2 guard Olivier-Paul Betu from Worcester Academy in Massachusetts were signed during the fall recruiting period.

UCD men’s soccer

Aggie standout Matt Wiesenfarth has been selected to participate in the U.S. Under-20 national team training camp in Portland, Ore., joining 24 players, who come from Major League Soccer club teams and some of the top collegiate programs in the country.

Wiesenfarth, who prepped at Jesuit and is the reigning Big West Conference Freshman of the Year, will train for a week alongside eight professionals, 10 collegians and six development academy players.

“This is a great opportunity for Matt,” said UCD head coach Dwayne Shaffer. “He has proven to be one of the top U20 players in the United States. He had a great season for us and winning the Big West Freshman of the Year Award shows what a great impact he made, not only for us, but on the league as well. It’s a great recognition for our program to have a player called in to the U20 National Camp.”

The team played an intrasquad scrimmage on Thursday, and will face Washington on Sunday (4 p.m.) at the Nike Campus in Portland.

Head coach Tab Ramos is preparing the squad for the 2013 FIFA Under-20 World Cup qualifying tournament, which will likely begin early next year.

In addition to being named the conference’s top freshman, Wiesenfarth was selected to the College Soccer News All-Freshman second team. In his debut season, he led the Aggies in goals (five), points (13) and shots (37).

UCD track

Kira Rienecker finished first in the 200-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 25.85 seconds on Thursday, scoring 810 points and helping lead the Aggie heptathlete into sixth place after the first day at Sacramento State’s Mid-Major Challenge.

Rienecker, competing in her second multi-event competition this season, scored 2,504 points, which beat her first-day total of 2,430 points at Chico State last month.

UCD freshman Murphy Nicholson has 2,035 points and is in 10th-place after four events at Sacramento State, also exceeding her total of 1,999 from the opening day at Chico.
