Sports briefs: Blue Devils get a wild softball win

ELK GROVE — The Davis High softball team walked 12 Monterey Trail batters, made six errors and left 15 runners on base Wednesday, but the only statistic the Blue Devils will remember is their 9-8 win.

DHS (6-13, 2-5 Delta League) got the much-need conference victory by scoring three times in the top of the seventh inning.

“This was a total team effort, a total team win,” said Devil coach Art Guerra.

Trailing 8-6 at the time, Davis was down to its final out after the first two batters were retired in the seventh. But that brought up senior Emily Ginn, who already had four hits in four at-bats, then made it 5-for-5 with a single.

Sophomore Audrey Dufresne followed with a hit and Evelyn Andrews’ fly ball to right was dropped by the Mustang fielder, sending one run home and bringing Rosey Heilmann to the plate. The sophomore smashed a double to right-center field and her third and fourth RBIs of the game gave the Blue Devils the lead.

The big inning was completed when Rachel Mobley held MTHS (3-10, 2-5) scoreless in the bottom of half. It was the second straight frame in which a DHS pitcher had come up huge as junior Brittany Eggers had escaped a jam in the sixth.

“That was a superstar moment for (Eggers),” Guerra explained. “She probably got put in in the toughest pitching position of the year and she bailed us out. That’s the kind of integrity this team has.”

Thanks to a shuffle of the schedule last week, the Devils are back on the diamond Thursday — their third game in three days — traveling to take on Elk Grove at 4 p.m.

DHS boys tennis

The Blue Devils went to Pleasant Grove and used their superior depth to down the Eagles, 7-2, in a Delta League match on Wednesday.

DHS’ Chase Kellison showed his endurance with his 6-2, 3-6 win at No. 3 singles, and the Devils got straight-set victories from Jasper Murphy (at No. 4), Victor Li (No. 5) and David Wang (No. 6).

It was Davis domination in doubles as the No. 1 duo of Yoshi Wainwright and Cooper Hosley captured their match, 6-0, 6-1. The Blue Devils also got easy wins at No. 2 — where Jeff Yin teamed with Young Shim for a 6-1, 6-4 victory — in the No. 3 matchup, with Kyle Qi/Roland Li prevailing, 6-0, 6-3.

UCD swimming and diving

Nine Aggies were named recently to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s All-Academic Team.

Davis High graduate Marissa LaFreniere was part of the UCD group, which also included three-time honoree Sam Rados and two-time award-winners Hanna Tears, Caroline Weston and Hilary Hunt. Hilvy Cheung, Kaitlin Leung, Kirsten Brand and Elise Roberts round out the Aggie crew.

To qualify, each student-athlete had to maintain a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average, be at least a sophomore academically, complete one full academic year at the institution prior to the season for which the award is being received and compete in at least 50 percent of the institution’s competitions.

UCD men’s tennis

Aggie freshman Everett Maltby was named the Big West Conference men’s tennis athlete of the week on Wednesday, his two wins helping lift UCD to a pair of upsets of ranked conference opponents and attain its highest-ever national ranking.

In victories over Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara, Maltby captured three-set matches both times at No. 5 singles. He pushed his record to 23-7 overall (tied for first on the Aggies) and 12-4 in dual matches to earn his first ever conference award.

Those triumphs helped the Aggies (15-4, 3-0) move up to 53rd in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll.

UCD women’s volleyball

Head coach Dan Conners announced that five talented recruits will join the Aggie program after signing during the spring period.

The new UCD quintet — Emily Allen of Santa Barbara, Malia Bolko of Benicia, Anna Donald of Sacramento, Lauren Jackson of Fullerton and Heather Reed of Brentwood — joins fall signees Brianna Karsseboom, Maddie Merlino and Nicola Moore to form the first recruiting class for Conners, who took over the program in June of 2014.

“I am excited about the most recent additions to our 2015 recruiting class,” said Conners. “This group will immediately fill holes in our lineup and provide depth in all positions.”

DHS boys lacrosse

The Blue Devil program’s annual Break the Record Night is set for April 24 at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium as DHS will host league rival Granite Bay, as well as honor its graduating seniors.

The fun night — which starts at 5:30 p.m. with the JV game and continues with the 7:30 p.m. varsity matchup — will feature music by the Davis High Madrigal Choir, as well as refreshments from local vendors Tommy J’s, Jamba Juice and Common Grounds.

The Devils seniors will be honored before the varsity game, with youngsters from the Davis Lacrosse Association getting recognized at halftime.

Admission is free for all lacrosse players and students with ASB cards, while adults are $5 and tickets for children, seniors and students without ASB cards cost $2.

Blue & White golf tourney

The Davis High Blue & White Foundation has its annual Day on the Green, a fundraising golf tournament, scheduled for Friday, May 8, at Wildhorse Golf Course.

After check-in at 11:30 a.m., lunch is at noon and a shotgun start (scramble format) is set for 1 p.m. Dinner and awards, including a raffle, are at 5 p.m.

For the cost of $150 per entry, players get lunch, cart, range balls, green fees, one raffle, ticket, a T-shirt and dinner. Registration is due by May 1 and can be found at www.blueandwhitegolf.com.

Sponsorship opportunities also are available and more information on the event can be found at www.dhsblueandwhite.org.
