Aggie sophomore Alyson Doherty finished with a game-high 20 points and six rebounds, Idit Oryon and Heidi Johnson each finished in double-figures, and the UC Davis women’s basketball team defeated visiting Humboldt State, 80-59, in an exhibition contest at The Pavilion.

Doherty hit 6-of-9 from the floor and added 8-of-9 from the free-throw line to lead all scorers and was joined in double digits by Oryon with 14 points, on 5-of-7 from the field, and Johnson with 12.

The game was tied at 13-13 midway through the first half, before a 13-0 run put UCD in control.

The Aggies officially tip-off the 2013-14 campaign on Friday at 7 p.m., when they host USC in a rematch of a 78-69 win by UCD in Los Angeles last year.

UCD women’s volleyball

Senior opposite Devon Damelio posted career highs of 28 kills and 24 digs and served her team back from a 14-10 deficit in the fifth, leading the visiting Aggies to a dramatic five-set, 25-14, 25-21, 20-25, 20-25, 16-14 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Saturday to give sixth-year head coach Jamie Holmes her 100th career win.

Damelio committed just four hitting errors on 66 swings for a .364 hitting average, and was one of five players in the match with 20 or more digs. UCD’s Megan Lancaster led all players with 26.

For the Aggies (14-9, 6-4 Big West Conference), junior Mary Schroeder tied her career best of 17 kills, while junior middle blocker Victoria Lee and junior outside hitter Valerie Brain had 10 kills apiece. In addition, freshman Kendall Frisoli posted four aces and senior Lindsay Dowd added another three.

UCD cross country

Junior Katie Fry finished in second overall as the Aggie women took second, while sophomore Brandon Pugh took third as part of a UCD men’s squad that finished third at the Big West Conference Championships on Saturday.

Host Cal Poly swept the men’s and women’s races at the Fairbanks Memorial Course.

Fry covered the course in 21:49.5 to finish behind the Mustangs’ individual champion Laura Hollander, who set a course record. Aggie seniors Alycia Cridebring (22:08.4) and Sarah Sumpter (22:08.7) finished in seventh and eighth, respectively, followed by senior Shannon Harcus in 12th, sophomore Christine Hoffmann in 16th and sophomore Erika Barr in 19th.

On the men’s side, Pugh covered the course in a time of 25:27.0, and DHS graduates Trevor Halsted (25:42.9) and Grayson Hough (26:11.3) took eighth and 10th, respectively, for UCD.

UCD men’s water polo

Senior Bernie Rogers scored five goals on Friday then had two, including the game-winner, on Saturday as the 17th-ranked Aggies posted a pair of upset victories on the road.

Friday at No. 12 Loyola Marymont, Rogers’ scoring, two goals by Alex Bagdasarian and one each from freshman Max Vigeant and Austin Beckwith helped UCD (11-12, 3-0 Western Water Polo Association) beat the Lions, 12-10, for the first time since 2011.

Rogers then scored just 23 seconds into the sudden-victory period to lift the Aggies over No. 10 UC San Diego, 12-11, on Saturday.

In that contest, DHS graduate Teddy Nicholson, a junior, scored four goals for UCD, including one in overtime, Beckwith had two and single tallies came from  Chris Richardson, Vigeant, Zoltan Lazar and former Blue Devil Trevor Allen, whose goal tied the game with just nine second left in regulation. Sophomore goalie Philip Bates recorded 10 saves in front of the Aggie cage.

UCD men’s golf

Three consecutive birdies on the back nine and an eagle on the front helped senior Matt Hansen shoot a 3-under 68 on Saturday as he tied for second while leading the Aggies to third place at the SCVB Pacific Invitational.

Ben Corfee of El Macero and Mike Brockington also had 68s for UCD, which was were playing its final fall tournament of the season.

The Aggies used their best round of the tournament on Saturday, firing a 10-under 274 for the second-best team score of the day to finish at 13-under 839.

Corfee was 5-under overall, tying for eighth, Brockington tied for 19th at par while Jonny Baxter, who closed with a 70, tied for 30th at 3-over. Luke Vivolo carded a 75 and tied for 34th at 5-over.

UCD swimming

The Aggies won 10 of the 16 events on Saturday to sweep a double dual from host San Diego and Oregon State. UCD (3-0) defeated the Toreros, 173.50-123.50, and handing the Beavers a 176-120 defeat at the USD Sports Center Pool.

The Aggies saw Hilary Hunt, Liliana Alvarez and Hilvy Cheung each post a pair of victories. Hunt swam to a season-best of 57.43 in the 100 backstroke, while Alvarez’s 2:19.56 in the 200 breaststroke also was a season-low.

Sophomore diver Lucy Lafranchise set a career-high in the 1-meter with a score of 271.27 to claim the Aggies’ first win of the day and was followed by the 200 IM relay squads of Hunt, Alvarez, Cheung and Haley Porter along with quartet of Lauren Damian, Maya Sprinsock, DHS grad Marrisa LaFreniere and Sabrina Cochrane, who finished 1-2 in the event.

Hunt won the 200 back to go with her 100 back victory, Alvarez did likewise capturing the 100 and 200 breast and Cheung touched first in the 100 and 200 butterfly events.

UCD field hockey

The Aggies celebrated the final college game of four seniors’ career with a 3-2 home win over Pacific on Friday, completing UCD’s first-ever sweep of its home schedule.

The victory also cinched a No. 2 West Division seeding at next week’s NorPac Championships. The Aggies (5-12, 3-3) will compete in their tournament opener on Thursday at 8 a.m.

On Friday, senior Cloey LemMon wasted no time, scoring her fifth goal off a rebound from a Stephie Sabraw shot to put UCD up 1-0.

LemMon is already the Aggies’ all-time leading scorer, and will enter next week’s tournament with 27 goals.

After a Tiger goal made it 1-1 at intermission, Sabraw redirected a Jamie Garcia shot to put UCD up 2-1 just 39 seconds into the second half.

Pacific tied the contest again, but Garcia sent the game-winner off the Tiger goalkeeper’s leg.
