UC Davis outshot Pacific, 31-3, at Aggie Stadium but still needed to rally from a goal down in the second half to beat the Tigers, 3-1, in a NorPac Conference women’s field hockey game on Friday.

Kristen Lopez provided the equalizer early in the second half, while Ashley Haight had the game-winner in the 54th minute. Emily Mecke provided an insurance goal just over three minutes later. Pacific picked up its lone goal from Amanda Spellman who scored in the 15th minute.

The game was the season opener for both teams, which had already faced each other during a preseason scrimmage. With Friday’s win, UCD has beat its local rivals thee consecutive times dating back to last season.

The Aggies dominated the ball throughout each half, leading 12-3 in shots in the first half alone. But they could not find the back of the cage before the break thanks to strong play from Pacific goalie Ashlee Schlesier who had 15 saves during the game.

Lauren Sawvelle went the distance in goal for UCD but was rarely tested, making just one save on the three Tigers’ shots.

The Aggies held Saint Mary’s scoreless until the 66th minute, but could not recover after the Gaels scored, and UCD fell 1-0 in the season opener for both teams on Saturday at Saint Mary’s Stadium in Moraga.

Justin Howard’s header midway through the second half gave the Gaels the advantage that they would not relinquish.

Earlier in the contest, Aggie Matt Sheldon forced Saint Mary’s goalkeeper Doug Herrick to save his shot from inside the box and a few seconds later Kevin Schulte’s attempt was blocked.

As the second half got underway, UCD’s Matt Wiesenfarth’s shot from the left side was saved by Herrick, as was Alex Henry’s attempt from the far left wing in the 57th minute.

John Joslin led the Aggies offensively with two shots, one of which was on frame.

UCD begins a four-game homestand on Friday with a game against Seattle at 5 p.m.

Junior outside hitter Allison Whitson was the tournament MVP, senior Katie Denny and sophomore setter Jenny Woolway both made the all-tournament squad and the Aggies went 3-0 at the Hampton Inn & Suites UNC Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion.

After a 23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-22 victory over Colorado on Friday and a 25-16, 25-22, 25-17 win over UNLV earlier on Saturday, UCD outlasted host Northern Colorado in a marathon match to cap the event.

Aggie sophomore Devon Damelio tallied 15 kills and recorded six blocks for the second straight match to lead UCD to a 25-15, 26-28, 13-25, 25-21, 16-14 victory over UNC.

Denny added 12 kills against just two errors for a .455 hitting average against the Bears, and had six blocks of her own.

Whitson led UCD offensively with 14 kills and four blocks in the win over UNLV.
