El Macero’s Ben Corfee was 3-under on the back nine of the Greg Norman Course in La Quinta during the first round of The Prestige at PGA WEST, co-hosted by the UC Davis men’s golf team on Monday. That helped him post a 3-under 68 and earn a tie for third place heading into the second round.

The 14th annual tournament, co-hosted by Stanford, features eight teams ranked among Golfstat’s top 50 including the No. 11 Cardinal, No. 17 Washington and No. 23 UCLA.

The Aggies were in ninth place after shooting 7-over 291 on Sunday. Besides Corfee’s 68, UCD also picked up a 72 from senior Matt Hansen and a 75 from Luke Vivolo. Jonny Baxter fired a 76 while Mike Brockington opened with a 78. Playing as individuals, Aggies Nicolas Noya (74) and Josh Granger (76) also hit well.

Corfee is three shots off the pace being set by co-leaders Maverick McNealy and Patrick Rodgers, both from Stanford.

UCD’s second round was set to begin at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday.

UCD women’s water polo

Freshman Carla Tocchini scored six total goals while senior Alex Rawlinson added another four to lead the 14th-ranked Aggies to wins over Bakersfield (10-6) and Cal State East Bay (15-4) in Sunday’s final day of the 34th Aggie Shootout at Schaal Aquatics Center. The Aggies came back from a 3-0 deficit in a 10-6 win over the Roadrunners to open the day, then rolled to a 15-4 victory over the Pioneers in the tournament finale.

Tocchini, who led UCD (8-7) with 10 goals for the tournament, scored four in her team’s early-morning victory over the Roadrunners, in which the Aggies erased a 2-0 deficit — then added another two in the nightcap with the Pioneers. Rawlinson had a goal and an assist in the first-quarter comeback early in the day before supplying a hat trick to pace 11 UCD scorers in the nightcap.

Junior Keelia Houston, a Davis High graduate, netted two goals in the win over Bakersfield.

UCD men’s tennis

The Aggies won a trio of three-setters as part of their five singles victories and captured the doubles point to down Causeway rival Sacramento State, 6-1, on Sunday at the Rio Del Oro Racket Club in Sacramento.

The win was the fourth straight for UCD (4-4), which snapped a seven-match losing streak to the Hornets in claiming its first victory in the series since 2006. The Aggies also snatched up five crucial points to increase their lead to 46.25-23.75 in the race for their second consecutive Causeway Cup.

The marathon singles matches were won by local sophomore Adam Levie (4-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6), senior Kyle Miller (4-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1) and sophomore Brett Bacharach, a 4-6, 6-4, 6-5 (7-2) victor at No. 3.

Other UCD singles triumphs came from senior Parker Kelley and freshman James Wade, while the pairings of Alec Adamson and Levie and Bacharach and Miller secured the doubles point for the Aggies.

UCD women’s tennis

A doubles sweep set the tone for the visiting Aggies on Sunday as they blanked UC Riverside, 7-0, on Sunday to post their first Big West Conference win of the season.

UCD (3-4, 1-1) saw the duos of Tiffany Pham/Samantha Martino and Megan Heneghan/Melissa Kobayakawa earn 8-1 victories and Layla Sanders team with Nicole Koehly to take an 8-4 decision.

Kamila Kecki was the first Aggie to finish her singles match, as she and teammate Frederique Sleiffer each won 6-0, 6-0.

Kobayakawa, Koehly, Pham and Heneghan added victories as all six singles matches went to UCD in straight sets.

UCD women’s golf

Sophomores Betty Chen and Andrea Wong finished eighth and 10th, respectively, after strong closing rounds on Sunday, leading the 37th-ranked Aggies to a second-place finish at the Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford Golf Course.

UCD shot an 11-over 586 on Sunday and was 18-over for the 36-hole tournament to finish ahead of two teams — No. 28 California and No. 16 Oregon — ranked ahead of it in the Golfstat standings.

Chen fired a 1-over 72 in the final round and was 3-over for the two-day tournament, while Wong was 4-over after shooting a team-best 71 on Sunday.

Their support came from Aggies Beverly Vatananugulkit, who tied for 15th at 6-over; freshman Paige Lee, who was 7-over and tied for 17th; and Blair Lewis, who tied for 28th at 9-over after finishing with a 75. Both Vatananugulkit and Lee had 77’s in the second round.

UCD women’s gymnastics

Senior Anna Shumaker came up huge on Sunday — capturing the individual vault and all-around titles, and sharing the meet win on uneven bars — to pace the Aggies to a road season-high 194.675 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation dual meet at Alaska Anchorage

The senior co-captain finished with a four-event total of 39.125. She claimed the vault win with a 9.775 and matched teammates Kala DeFrancesco and Lisa Wiktorski for the bars title with a 9.800. Shumaker added a second-place 9.825 on floor exercise before closing out the meet with a 9.725 on balance beam.

Including the top spots on vault and bars, UCD had wins on each event. Sophomore Stephanie Stamates tied her season best of 9.875 to capture the floor exercise title while junior Tiana Montell helped the Aggies sweep the top six places on beam with a season-best 9.825.

In addition, UCD freshman Yonni Michovska aided the bars effort with a solid 9.750. Redshirt freshman Katy Nogaki put up a 9.675 on vault, senior Madeline Kennedy kicked off the floor rotation with a 9.725, while sophomore Dani Judal (9.800) and senior Regi Solvkjar (9.750) helped out on beam.

UCD track and field

Aggie standout Ashley Marshall won the 60-meter dash at the Husky Invitational on Saturday, a day after setting a school record in the 200 for the women’s indoor team.

UCD had several strong performances at meet, including from Cekarri Nixon, Alycia Cridebring, Erika Barr, Katie Barber and Holly Tokar.

But Marshall was the star as she opened her meet on Friday night by finishing fourth in the 200 with a Aggie all-time best of 24.56 seconds. She came back on Saturday to post the fastest prelim time (7.45) among the field of 51 competitors. That earned Marshall a spot in the finals where she crossed in 7.41 to win by 0.2 seconds.

Nixon had another good mark in the 200, finishing fifth in 24.97, the third-fastest time in program history.

Cridebring and Barr both earned spots on the all-time UCD list for the mile. Cridebring, racing in the invitational section, was timed in 4:43.45 to move to second all-time while Barr’s 4:56.19 was good for fifth on the list.

In the field events, Barber posted a career-best mark in the high jump, tying for fifth at 5 feet, 5.75 inches, — a mark that was good for fifth in school history — and Tokar went 12-6 in pole vault to match her spot at No. 2 all-time.
