There was magic in the air on Friday night at The Pavilion.

On a night when the UC Davis women’s gymnastics team recognized its three seniors — Anna Shumaker, Madeline Kennedy and Regi Solvkjar — and honored Friends of Jaclyn, a national foundation that improves the quality of life for children and families battling pediatric brain cancer, the Aggies put up a special performance.

Shumaker crushed her career highs on floor exercise and the all-around to lead UCD to a school- and conference-record 196.425 score in winning a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation dual meet with Seattle Pacific. The visiting Falcons were feeling the good vibes as well, setting their own program record with a 194.575.

The Aggies (8-8) also shattered the school benchmarks on uneven bars (49.225) and tied the UCD standard on floor exercise (49.425). Additionally, the Aggies’ 48.825 vault score ranks fourth all-time while the 48.950 on beam takes over third place on that list.

Shumaker compiled a 39.275 in the all-around, besting her previous high by 0.50 and marking the third highest individual score in team history. She capped her performance with a 9.925 on floor, putting her in tie for fourth place all-time.

Shumaker’s historic score led a 1-2-3 UCD sweep on floor exercise. She just edged teammates Kala DeFrancesco and Stephanie Stamates, who each hit career highs of 9.900. Shumaker also placed third on vault (9.775) and tied fellow co-captain Kennedy for third on beam (9.775).

Aggie sophomore Dani Judal and junior Lisa Wiktorski shared the uneven bars win, each tying their personal bests of 9.875. In fact, five Aggies either matched or set career highs in that second rotation with DeFrancesco scoring 9.850, freshman Yonni Michovska adding a 9.825 and sophomore Jamie Yamashita posting a 9.800.

Similarly, five UCD gymnasts set or tied career highs on floor in the final rotation, including Kennedy’s 9.825 and Tiana Montell’s 9.825.

Solvkjar notched a career high of 9.850 to win the beam and edge Judal’s second-place 9.825 as the Aggies swept the first four places.

As part of Friends of Jaclyn Awareness Night, the team honored Alyssa Kalb, a 6-year-old whom the Aggies “adopted” on Feb. 5; Greg Campbell, a former UCD wide receiver who now serves as the chief of staff for the California Assembly Speaker’s office; and Sarah Sumpter, a standout distance runner who earned All-American and Big West Conference Athlete of the Year honors for the Aggies. All three have fought varying types of brain tumors over the past two years.

UCD women’s water polo

Four Aggies — sophomores Allyson Hansen, Sammi Murphy and Ariel Arcidiacono and freshman Carla Tocchini — each had three goals on the day as No. 16 UCD beat Concordia, 17-3, then edged host No. 18 Santa Clara, 8-7, in a pair of outings at the Sullivan Center on Saturday.

Hansen scored a hat trick in the nightcap against SCU, while five other players each chipped in a goal for the Aggies (11-10). After leading 7-3 at intermission, UCD got a second-half goal from Katrina Husted and that was just enough to hold off the Broncos.

Aggie junior Keelia Houston, a Davis High graduate, scored a goal in the close win.

In the earlier game, Murphy had a hat trick, while Arcidiacono, Tocchini and senior center Hannah Curran added two tallies each to lead 12 UCD scorers. The Aggies’ margin of victory was the biggest since a 2011 win over Pomona-Pitzer.

UCD track & field

Kira Rienecker and Murphy Nicholson went 1-2 in the meet-ending 800-meter run to help both Aggies post career-best heptathlon scores, while Hawk Hammer won two events on the second day of the decathlon, as UCD finished strong on Friday at the Chico State Multi-Event Classic.

Rienecker finished second in the event’s top section with 4,508 points, while Nicholson jumped four spots to place sixth with 4,043. Rienecker’s score was good enough for fourth on the Aggies’ all-time list and Nicholson moved into the No. 10 position by becoming the 10th UCD heptathlete to break the 4,000-point barrier.

Hammer was in sixth place entering the second day of the decathlon’s B section but moved up to finish third with 5,282 points.

The remainder of the Aggie track and field athletes will begin their season on Saturday at Cal.
