FRESNO — Following a season-opening victory on Friday, the first day of the Fresno State Kick-Off, the UC Davis softball team earned splits on Saturday and Sunday to get 2013 started with a 3-2 record.
On Saturday, tournament delays forced a late start to both of the Aggie contests, a 4-2 loss to the host Bulldogs and a 5-2 win over UTEP that ended after midnight.
Hours later, UCD got its second victory in three days over Southern Miss, this time by a score of 5-2, then dropped an exciting tournament finale against rival Sacramento State.
Against Fresno State, the Aggies nearly came back from a 4-0 deficit as junior second baseman Chandler Wagner knocked in two runs with a triple. But the locals didn’t score another run until their later outing, when sophomore first baseman Amy Nunez knocked in freshman right fielder Jasmine Lee in the first inning. UCD actually fell behind 3-1 in that game before coming back by tallying four times in the bottom of the fifth.
On Sunday, pitchers Justine Vela (three innings, one hit) and Jessica Thweatt (four innings, one hit) combined to hold Southern Miss to just two runs, while the Aggies got offense from junior catcher Kelly Schulze (3-for-3, with 3 RBIs) and sophomore center fielder Krista Brava (two hits, RBI).
Ending the day against a familiar foe, UCD fell behind the Hornets, 2-0, before cutting the lead in half in the top of the seventh when freshman designated player Christina Guidry scored on a double by Bava. That set up the decisive moment as Aggie freshman Janelle Gusiff ripped a single up the middle and sent Bava around the bases, headed for home.
Only a perfect throw from Sacramento State center fielder Kelli Frye would have prevented Bava from tying the contest, but that’s what the Hornets got and the game ended with Sac State on top.
