MONTEREY PARK — The UC Davis women’s swimming and diving team began the defense of its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship with a school record and a pair of second-place finishes in the first two events Wednesday at East Los Angeles College.

The Aggies finished second behind UC Santa Barbara (1:39.87) in both the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay to kick off the meet.

In the 200, the UCD quartet of Hilary Hunt, Liliana Alvarez, Megan Leung and Haley Porter, was edged by just .02 seconds after setting an Aggie record of 1:39.89. Samantha Shellem, Katie Edwards, Kirsten Brand and Porter finished in 7:17.94 to take second in the 800.

The four-day MPSF swim championships continue Thursday while the diving portion of the competition also is set to begin at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in Pasadena.
