The UC Davis women’s tennis team will get help all the way from Texas next season as coach Bill Maze recently announced the signing of Samantha Martino to a national letter of intent.
The Katy, Texas, native will begin competing for the Aggies this fall.
“We are very lucky to have Samantha joining us this season,” Maze said. “She is an excellent tennis player, particularly in doubles, and is a fantastic student. We are looking forward to giving her a warm welcome when she arrives.”
A four-year varsity competitor at Seven Lakes High, Martino comes to Davis after a successful prep career in one of the toughest districts in the state.
In doubles action, Martino teamed with Nicole Breaux to compete in five tournaments last spring and advanced to the finals of each event, winning three championships.
After winning a district doubles title in 2010, the duo captured district and regional crowns this season on its way to earning a No. 3 state ranking.
As a singles player, Martino advanced to the regionals on two occasions. She finished as district runner-up and got a No. 3 regional ranking in 2011, then won a singles district championship last year to end that season ranked No. 4.
Martino joins a UCD team that returns six players from a 2012 campaign that included a run to the quarterfinals of the Big West Championships.
