UCD gets votes in FCS football rankings

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. Ñ UC Davis received 61 points in The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS Top 25 preseason poll, tying for an unofficial ranking of No. 37 from sports information directors and the media, it was announced on Monday afternoon.

The defending Great West Conference Aggies, who are the pick of the leagueÕs head coaches to repeat in 2010, tied in the poll with Samford. The poll will be released weekly throughout the regular season. The Football Championship Subdivision coaches conduct the other major poll and will release their rankings later this month.

Defending national champion Villanova (14-1) received 104 first-place votes and had 3,112 points, taking the preseason No. 1 spot in the media/sports information directors poll. Montana (14-1), Appalachian State (11-3), William & Mary (11-3) and Southern Illinois (11-2) round out the top five.

Five Aggie opponents received votes in the poll, including Weber State (7-5), which is ranked 19th and will host UCD on Sept. 18. Conference rival Cal Poly has an unofficial ranking of 28th after receiving 239 points. Portland State (18 points), Southern Utah (14 points) and North Dakota (8) also earned mention.

The Aggies are currently in preseason practices, preparing for their season-opening matchup on Sept. 4 at Cal. TheyÕll host their first game on Sept. 11 against Portland State.
