This week’s picks, in the final week of a much-too-short college football season, are as follows:
STANFORD over ARIZONA STATE … two months ago when these two met, Stanford led 39-7 before the Sun Devils cried “Uncle” and Cardinal coach I.M. Kind put the band director and the Tree mascot into the game to keep the score down. And now, somehow, Arizona State is favored? Surely you jest.
OKLAHOMA STATE over OKLAHOMA … the Cowboys are good enough to play for the national championship.
AUBURN over MISSOURI … miracles come in threes.
FRESNO STATE over UTAH STATE … the Bulldogs’ complete lack of a defense finally caught up with them in last week’s shootout loss to San Jose State. Last team with the ball wins this one.
NORTHERN ILLINOIS over BOWLING GREEN … once again the powerful Huskies earn the right to get flat out embarrassed in a BCS bowl.
NORTH DAKOTA STATE over FURMAN … the Mighty Bison chase a third straight I-AA title.
EASTERN WASHINGTON over SOUTH DAKOTA STATE … the Bison (see above) had better watch out for the high-flying Eagles.
RUTGERS over SOUTH FLORIDA … who cares?
CENTRAL FLORIDA over SOUTHERN METHODIST … see “Rutgers” above.
NAVY over ARMY (Dec. 14) … the Midshipmen run the wishbone to perfection. The Cadets continue to have trouble running their wish-and-a-prayer offense.
UPSET OF THE WEEK: Michigan State over Ohio State … the Buckeyes finally meet their match. (Upset record: 5-9).
ROUT OF THE WEEK: Florida State over Duke … they call this a league championship game? Duke’s lacrosse team might be able to beat the Seminoles, but not the Duke football team. (Rout record: 14-0).
DON’T BET ON IT, BUT: Baylor over Texas … the Bears are still reeling after Oklahoma State knocked the stuffing out of them a couple of weeks ago. (Don’t bet record: 9-5).
FIVE EASY PICKS: There are no easy picks during championship week. (FEP season record: 65-0).
OTHER GAMES: Monopoly, Clue, Checkers, Candyland and Chutes and Ladders.
Last week: 34-13, season: 497-100, percentage: .832.
