Sports briefs: Watney cards another 69 at Zurich Classic

Davis High graduate Nick Watney has been the model of consistency at the Zurich Classic this weekend at TPC Louisiana as he shot his third consecutive 3-under 69 on Saturday. The former Blue Devil, who got his first PGA Tour victory at this event in 2007, overcame early bogeys on both his front and back nine on Saturday.

Watney finished his round with a birdie on No. 18 and was at 9-under and tied for 11th.

Lucas Glover increased his lead to two strokes with a 2-under 70. He was at 14-under par.

Levien has a hat trick

Sophomore Hannah Levien, a Davis High graduate, had three goals on Saturday but the third-seeded Marist women’s water polo team suffered a 12-9 loss to second-seeded Iona in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals.

Levien’s hat trick all came in the second half for the Red Foxes (24-12, 10-2 MAAC).

DHS football

The Blue Devil football program’s mandatory preseason player/parent meeting is set for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The meeting, which is for those interested in playing freshman, JV or varsity football for DHS in the fall, will be at the Davis High library.

Discussions will include responsibilities of the players; upcoming mandatory dates of attendance; spring football; summer events like the Sierra Football Camp; new CIF eligibility rules; the Champions Camp as well as the Lift-A-thon and other fundraisers. Critical registration, eligibility and physical forms will be explained.

At least one parent must attend. For major issues regarding attendance, contact coach Steve Smyte at ssmyte@djusd.net.

Field hockey clinic

Looking for a fun, fast-paced new sport? Join members of the undefeated 2012 Eastern Athletic League Champion Davis High field hockey team for a clinic from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium at DHS.

This clinic is for players ages 11 and older. A stick will be provided, but individuals need to wear tennis or turf shoes and shin guards.
