Watney shoots a solid 69 in first round of PGA

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It was a good opening day at the PGA Championship for Davis High graduate Nick Watney (69), heavy favorite Rory McIlroy (66) and co-leaders Lee Westwood and Kevin Chappell, who shot 65s at Valhalla.

On the other end of the spectrum was Tiger Woods, who made just one birdie and finished nine strokes back with a 3-over 74.

“I didn’t play as well as I wanted to. I didn’t get a putt to the hole,” Woods said. “That’s not a good combo.”

Watney looked like he might be headed that direction after opening with bogeys on the first two holes before regrouping. He had just one bogey the rest of the way against five birdies, and hit 14 greens in regulation.

Still, like Woods, Watney would have liked to be better once he got to the green. The former Blue Devil missed three putts from inside 10 feet.

He did, however, finish strong, carding his final birdie on the 18th hole to end his day just four shots out of the lead.
