From UC Davis graduate to Olympian to Davis AquaMonsters youth coach, local swimmer Scott Weltz wears many caps.

At midnight Thursday PST, he will wear his U.S. National Team apparel as he swims in a preliminary race of the 200 breaststroke at the FINA World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.

Should he make the finals, Weltz will be back in the water at 9 a.m. PST Friday to swim for a title.

The championships are contested in a short-course format meaning the length of the pool is just 25 meters (instead of 50, like the Olympics). This will be a challenge to Weltz, who excels in long-course races.

Weltz won the 200 breaststroke at last June’s Olympic Trials — coming from behind in the later stages of the races — then took fifth at the Summer Games in London. The performance earned him a spot on the National Team and a training stipend for the year.
