What fun for Choate and Blue Devil baseball

By From page B2 | February 14, 2013

“I like being around the kids,” St. Louis Cardinal left-hander Randy Choate said, surveying the Davis High baseball field just before flying to Florida recently for spring training.

“It reminds me a lot of when I was in high school (in Texas),” adds the short-relief specialist.

Choate, who is married to Leigh Whitmire, a former Blue Devil and DHS physical education teacher, has spent a lot of time with the local prep team since the couple met back in 2004.

“He’s been great with the kids,” Devil baseball coach Dan Ariola reports. “To have a major-leaguer out there working in the outfield, helping our pitchers in the bullpen — then throwing batting practice. The players love that and are (energized) telling people that they hit off an MLB player.”

Said Choate, “I tell Leigh all the time that I don’t know really how big of a deal it is, but it is nice to hear my stepdaughter Makena come home and say that some of the players talk about ‘how cool it is Randy when he comes around.’ ”

It’s not clear who enjoys the minicamp more — the Blue Devils or the St. Louis Cardinal.
