After a match where it didn’t play up to its potential and lost in five games to Delta Valley Conference foe Laguna Creek, a two-week break from competition might be just what the Davis High boys volleyball team needs to regroup.
The Blue Devils fell to 1-2 in the DVC despite taking a 2-1 games lead on the road Wednesday. DHS eventually fell to the Cardinals 27-29, 25-15, 23-25, 25-20 and 15-7.
“We had a lot of unforced errors and lost our consistency,” said Devil coach Julie Crawford. “Carrying momentum from one game to the next has become one of our real weaknesses. We didn’t come together as a team (Thursday).”
Much of the good volleyball Davis played came courtesy of seniors Bryan Hensley and Isaac Contreras, the Blue Devils’ setter. Both players stepped up as the locals played without one of their starters because of illness.
“They really kept us in the game,” Crawford said. “They kept hustling and trying to keep everybody fired up.”
Because of spring break next week and a game cancellation the next, DHS doesn’t have another match until the middle April. Crawford hopes the time can be used to strengthen her team’s mental game.
“We are going to be practicing very hard and trying to develop a lot,” she said.
