Though it wasn’t quite enough to capture the championship — that honor went to the host Chico Nuts — Yolo’s performance last weekend against some of the best american baseball legion teams in the area bodes well for the future.
A loss in Wednesday’s opener was quickly forgotten, once Post 77 got going and did not lose again in four more games at the Chico Father’s Day Tournament. Victories on Thursday and Friday were followed by an 8-8 tie against the Reno Knights, before Yolo capped the event with a 9-4 win over the Sierra Sun Devils on Sunday at Doryland Field.
Backing starter Nate Gonzalez, Yolo (11-6-1) scored twice in the bottom of the second inning — taking a lead it would never relinquish — and put the game away with a six-run third.
Former Davis High catcher Tom Lyon spent all seven inning behind the plate for Post 77, and that did little to slow down his bat. Lyon had hits in all four of his at-bats, and added two RBIs to a great offensive day.
Rounding in to form after an injury that cost him most of his senior season with the Blue Devils in 2010 and forced him to redshirt at Cosumnes River College in 2011, Luke McDonald blasted three hits including a double and knocked in two Yolo runs. Another former DHS player, Josh Cosio had a pair of hits for Post 77, while Andrew Lojewski added two hits and two RBIs.
Yolo’s Byron Wickstrom came on in the sixth and finished the game with a scoreless seventh inning.
This week, Post 77 and West Sacramento will play a three-game set beginning Tuesday at 5 p.m. That contest — as well as a Thursday matchup — will be at River City High School, with a Wednesday game schedule for 7 p.m. at Clark Field.
