The 5-0 Davis Blue Devil boys rugby club’s silver team kept its impressive string of victories intact by pounding Northern Nevada, 75-0, on Saturday.

The local forwards controlled the loose play all game, and Davis’ stable of fleet backs spun several long and dazzling runs. Blue Devils Eli Castro, Carson Murray and Tyler Roberts played stellar defense with hard tackling and aggressive rucking.

Nine different Davis players touched down for tries, with Oscar Sepulveda, Ahmari Hayes, Winfred Roberson and Quinn Williams all recording multiple scores. Carson Bernard, Brendan MacDonald, Brian Stanbenfledt and Quinten Jones found paydirt as well, and Nash Nunes and Reid Blankenship counterrucked well.

Earlier in the day, the Devil Bronze team rebounded from a 12-point, second-half deficit and rallied to a 34-22 win over the Vacaville Bulldog Rugby Club.

The Davis forwards wore down the visitors by being first to the rucks and controlling most of the set pieces, springing their nifty backs for long runs. Locals Quinten Jones, Tristan Tadano, Joe Lanoue, Talek Deary and David Kim each registered scores, while Richie Navarrete, Michal Goodison and newcomer James Kilkenny provided solid tackling and rucking for the Blue Devils.

Lady Devil rugby

The Lady Blue Devil Rugby Club traveled to Arcata on Saturday and edged Humboldt, 22-15, to improve to 3-1 on the season.

Humboldt dominated the first half of the game and went into intermission with a 10-0 lead.

But the Lady Devils came back strong in the second half as Angelica Lopez scored the first try and, after Jenna Plasterer hit paydirt, Lopez added a successful two-point conversion put her team up 12-10.

Later, Perla Portillo traded tries with Humboldt before Davis’ Brigi Glass secured the win with one final score.

Knights U15 lacrosse

The Davis Knights’ U15 boys lacrosse team split a pair of games last week, including a 15-1 victory over the Diablo Scorpions on Saturday.

Against the Scorpions, the Knights’ explosive offense was paced by Rowan Hart’s four goals and six assists, while Sean Gellen added a hat trick and an assist of his own. In addition, Austin Griffiths and Aidan Mager scored two goals each with single tallies coming from Quinn Harty, Diego Sandlin, Lucas Brown and Liam Condon.

Davis goalie Miles Herget had three saves in a near shutout, Kyle Morse won eight draws and Matt Kelly captured both of his face-offs. Morse also recovered seven ground balls, while Ethan Iacono added six.

The local defense also played well in a 9-3 loss to Granite Bay on Sunday. The offense struggled through a scoreless first three periods but came out strong in the final quarter with Hart scoring twice and Griffiths adding a goal. Herget, Condon, Iacono and Paul Buhlman completed a good defensive performance by holding GB without a goal in the fourth period.

Knights U11 lacrosse

The Davis Knights’ U11 boys lacrosse team played the Diablo Scorpions tough in a 4-3 loss on a hot Saturday afternoon

The highlights for Davis included a big advantage on face-offs and good stick-checking by the defense that resulted in turnovers and led to fast breaks. The Knights coaches also noted a decrease in penalties from the week before.

Local goals came from Cameron Duncan and Taylor Vaughn, who each found the net in the second quarter to send the game into halftime tied at 2-2.

A fourth-period goal by Tanner McNamera briefly knotted the contest again before a late Diablo tally clinched the win.

Davis goalies Gerad Lichtenhan and Mason Johnstone posted three saves apiece.

NorCal hockey

Two NorCal Extreme Hockey Club teams participated in last weekend’s Sierra Inline Hockey League tournament in Chico and each brought home first-place honors.

The local 12U team finished undefeated, shutting out the San Jose Tsunami (6-0) and the Chico Firebirds (7-0), and dominating the Livermore Vipers, 7-2.

Goals were scored by the entire NorCal roster, with Sam Blakewell, Jack Shields, Cole Skoog, Thomas Witham, Keith Walker and Nick Blakewell all finding the net. Extreme 12U goalie Max Muller was on point, saving 93 percent of the shots he saw.

NorCal’s 14U also rolled through the tournament without a loss, beating the Chico Firebirds (4-3), the Delta River Rats (3-1) and blanking the Half Moon Bay Cougars (7-0).

Extreme goals came from Max Landy, Dylan Lee, Miguel Witham, Joe Blakewell, Brandon Pacciorini and Sam Blakewell, while Jack Shields played shut-down defense to help goalie Nicholas Leacox (30 stops, save percentage of 87).
