Davis Diamonds gymnasts Bethany McElhern, Alexandra Lee, Alannah Griesemer, Emma Rebhun, Kathleen Sheridan, Haylee Aquino, Vivian Lee, Brenna Peterson and Isabel Lavallee each won at least one gold medal last weekend at the Disco-Tech Invitational in Rancho Cordova.
The strong individual performances helped the Davis Level 3 gymnasts win their session, while the Diamonds Level 4s took second. Following the meet, which was the last chance for gymnasts to qualify, the locals now have a team-record 29 athletes headed to the state championships.
The Davis Level 3 gymnasts dominated the middle-B division, taking the top three places in the all-around. Rebhun, who won the vault, was first, followed by Sheridan — whose winning balance beam score of 9.425 was the highest in any division – in second. Aquino was third in the all-around after posting a 9.65 on the floor exercise that was the best score among all of Level 3 or 4.
Also competing in the middle-B division, Chloe Nelson grabbed the silver on the uneven parallel bars and Lily Rigor broke 36 for the first time to take ninth all-around.
The Diamonds then nabbed five of the top six all-around places in the middle-A session, led by Alexandra Lee, who won floor and took second on vault, bars and beam. Anissa Morgan took bronze in the all-around, while Griesemer won bars to finish fourth. New state meet qualifiers Sarah Bennetts and Charlotte Stevens were fifth and sixth in the all-around, while Ava Guistino was ninth.
Also at Level 3, Davis’ Maren McGuire finished seventh all-around in the oldest division, while McElhern won the beam and floor golds in the younger division, where Sofia Patriquin qualified for the state championships and was 10th all-around.
Among the Level 4 gymnasts, Aubrey Watts put together four good performances to take bronze on vault and in the all-around for the locals in the younger division.
In the intermediate age division, Vivian Lee won beam and was fourth all-around, Reyna Shauman took sixth all-around and Katie Borowsky was seventh. Nadia Mayer finished 15th all-around.
Peterson tied for first on bars in the oldest division, then took the silvers on beam, floor, and all-around, where teammate Carmin Fisk was fourth and Maeve Kelly took ninth. Lavallee won beam and Julia Miyamoto was fifth on vault to help Davis take second place.
Diamonds Level 2 gymnasts Olivia Rebhun (fifth all-around), Kiera Taylor (seventh) and Ella Obegi (eighth) performed well in the youngest division, while April Seeger was third on bars with Ahma Masselink and Claire Miller 10th and 12th, respectively, in the intermediate age all-around.
In the oldest division, Jenna Shepard grabbed the vault bronze, with teammates Kyla Greenhut and Samantha Morante 10th and 13th, respectively, in the all-around.
Junior golf
The Northern California Junior Golf Tour’s third annual Wildhorse Junior Open was played Saturday and Sunday, with several Davis players performing well among the field of 12- to 18-year-olds from throughout Northern California.
Davis 13-year-old Griffin Long used rounds of 73 and 82 to win the boys 11-14 division by 13 strokes. Another local, Jackson Masiel, was close behind, taking fifth place with a strong showing.
Jackson’s sister Emily Masiel, a 16-year-old who helped the Davis High squad to the Masters meet this fall, took first place in the girls 12-18 division in her first Junior Tour start. She shot a 77 on Saturday and an 84 on Sunday, while another Davis player, 12-year-old Maria Dean, also had a pair of solid rounds.
Also representing Davis with strong performances in the boys 15-18 division were Sam Yamauchi, Preston Walchli, Clayton Webster, Cyrrus Espino and Dylan Lee.
Velocity soccer
The Davis Velocity, a U18 girls soccer team, rolled to a 1-0 victory over the Stockton Cougars on Saturday at St. Mary’s High in Stockton.
The decisive goal came midway through the second half when Macaylea Mitchell took a pass from fellow striker Sandra Figueroa and blasted it past the Stockton keeper.
Meanwhile, after Davis goalie Stephanie Doss made three key first-half saves, Velocity held the Cougars without a shot on goal after the break. The stingy local defense was paced by the rangy, physical play of Claire Bulhman, Jessica Cummins, Natalie Silver and Gabby Willey.
In addition, midfielders Shawna Mclaughlin, Brooke Palmer, Jasmine Calderon and Alexis Olmedo allowed Davis to dominate possession throughout the second half, creating offensive opportunities for teammates Sarah Quintero, Jade Bugsch and Ally Bowers.
Stampede soccer
The Davis Stampede, a U12 girls soccer team, continued NorCal fall league play by squeezing out a 1-0 win over league-leading FC Elk Grove on Friday.
The winning goal came late in the second half when Jordan Davis whipped in a cross that striker Ainsley Caroll tapped to a charging Allie Belafsky for the finish.
On Saturday, Davis played a defensive battle against Sac United that ended in a scoreless tie.
Thunder softball
The Davis Thunder, a 10U softball team, concluded its NorCal Girls Fastpitch winter season in the Down & Dirty Tournament in Loomis late last month.
In its first game, Davis took an early lead but let it slip away and lost an extra-inning heartbreaker to Elk Grove Dynamite, 11-10.
In that contest, Jordan Zuniga (3-for-3), Bella Hyder (2-for-3), Halle Gabriel, Bella Contreras, Tara Reddy and Stevie Spencer contributed hits for the Thunder, while Zuniga, Gabriel and Reddy each scored two runs. Local pitcher Spencer (three strikeouts) went the distance in the circle.
Davis fell behind in its afternoon game, then nearly rallied all the way back before losing, 9-5, to the Roseville Wrecking Crew. Hyder went 2-for-2 at the plate and pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts.
Reddy (who also had a hit), Spencer, Lauren Lee, Heather Breckner and Katianna Higgins scored runs for the Thunder.
