The NorCal Extreme’s 16U roller hockey team completed its season with a strong performance at the North American Roller Hockey Championships.

Competing in the gold division, the Extreme defeated the Arizona Mission Bauer Outcasts (3-2) and the Colorado Junior Mudcats (5-1), while also suffering a pair of losses.

Seeded fifth, NorCal advanced to the quarterfinals where it came up just short in a 2-1 loss to the Sherwood Park Bullfrogs of Alberta, Canada.

Paul Hermle, Danny Kumata, Caleb Hermle, Jacob Muller and Matt Reiff combined their offensive efforts to pace the Extreme in goals and assists, with defensive strength added by Joe Blakewell, Daniel Rooney, Adam Steele and goalie Ryan Culligan, who finished with 78 saves.

Los Azules soccer

The Davis Los Azules, a U16 boys soccer team, used a defense that did not allow a single goal in all four games to capture the Junction City Silver Cup tournament title last weekend in Roseville.

The locals capped the tournament with a 2-0 victory over Fair Oaks in the championship contest.

Otto Nichols scored both goals in the finale, getting assists from Anirufh Ramakrishnan and Murtaza Masroor, while Davis goalie Mac Meesheidt made several spectacular saves.

On the way to the title game, Los Azules posted shutout wins over the Pythons (5-0), the Roseville Abyss (6-0) and the CVU Barcelona (4-0). Goals in those victories came from Nichols (four), Ruben Mendoza (three), Bryant Murray (two), Rohan Mohapatra (two), Rudy Campos, Will Stukas, Thomas Oide and Ramakrishnan, with Kaleb McYates providing assists in each contest.

The defensive efforts of Alec Farboud, Juan Pablo Almanza, Ryan Quinn, Winston Tran, Masroor, Oide and Mendoza were key in keeping every Davis opponent scoreless.

Davis AquaMonsters

Despite fielding the smallest team at the Comstock Conference Swim Championships on July 23-24, the host Davis AquaMonsters dominated the high point awards.

With 1,100 young swimmers converging on Schaal Aquatics Center, one athlete — Davis’ Kyla Leacox — stood out from the pack. The 12-year-old speedster won all of her events and set four new Northern California Swim League records in the process. The marks came in the 50-meter freestyle (25.33), the 100 free (1:00.20), the 50 breaststroke (32.65) and the 50 butterfly (27.87), while also winning the 100 individual medley.

The AquaMonsters had five high-point winners and 11 more swimmers finishing in the top 10 at their age group.

In addition to Leacox the locals had several other strong performances in the girls 11-12 division as Annie Brennan, Cody Hargadon and Mia Motekaitis all reached the finals in five events. Motekaitis took third in the 100 IM, while Brennan was fourth in the 50 breast. Piper Hechtl competed in two final races.

Davis’ Nikki Adkins qualified in six girls 13-14 events and won four including the 100 IM, 50 backstroke and 100 free. Juju Chan made a couple of final races and used a great kick to capture the 50 breast, Alyssa Lengtat added five finals appearances and Kimmy Siu and Claire McElhern also picked up points for the locals.

Nicholas Borowsky captured the 13-14 boys high point award for the AquaMonsters with wins in the 50 back and the 100 IM and four other second- and third-place finishes. Teammate Erik Echeona qualified for three final races, taking fourth overall in the 50 back.

In the boys 15-18 division, local swimmer Colten Montgomery made the finals in five events, taking second in the 50 free, 100 back and 50 fly. Davis also got points from Alice Renaud, who was third in the 50 free, and Elizabeth Banister (third, 100 back) in the oldest girls division.

The AquaMonsters got more points from their 6-under group as Bethany McElhern and Makena Leacox finished 1-2 in the girls high-point rankings and Alexa Bercutt swam well in the 25 free and 25 back. On the boys side it was Brennan Fuchslin taking high-point honors for Davis.

Additional local contributions came from Kaitlyn McElhern, Jacob Taylor and Galen Plotkin.

Davis Water Polo Club

The Davis Water Polo Club’s boys 14U squad had a successful opening day at the National Junior Olympic Age Group Championships on Saturday at Stanford.

The 15th-seeded locals started off against No. 33 Stockton in a game that was tied at the half. Davis, however, exploded for nine second-half goals to pull out a 13-10 victory.

Cameron Wright paced DWPC by tallying seven times, with Tucker Fisk (three), Nick Borowsky, Peter Blumberg and Daniel Alvarez adding goals. Goalies Jensen Giest and Garrett Dawson provided great defense to preserve the win.

In an exciting second game, Davis fell behind early and needed a late goal to force a shootout against No. 10 South Bay United. After the teams finished tied at 10-10 at the end of regulation, the first round of penalty shots also ended in a dead heat, forcing a sudden-death second round.

Finally, Borowsky converted a penalty shot — his third goal of the game — to give the locals a 15-14 victory. Steven Csaposs and Reese Peterson provided key DWPC goals in the win.
