Fifteen of the youngest and least experienced Davis Diamonds performed like veterans at the recent Gypsy Invitational, a USA Gymnastics Junior Olympics-sanctioned meet in Concord.
Competing at Level 2, Davis won the team bronze and saw Violet Watts win both vault and beam in the younger division.
In that same division, Sonja Clayton captured third place on bars and Camille Berrong added a bronze medal of her own for floor exercise. Watts scored 9.225 on her winning vault and 9.375 in taking the beam gold to score a 35.75 all-around, good for third place. Berrong was fifth in the all-around, and teammates Shai Kol, Cianna Kupperman, Sophie Logvy, Mia Haudenschild, Hailey Reed, Julianna Van Boxtel and Samantha Fong all showed improvement.
Among the older gymnasts, Diamond Ella Obegi scored a 9.075 on bars to take second place, was third on beam (at 9.2) and fourth all-around with a 36.275. Davis’ Ahma Masselink was in fifth all-around (35.875) behind a floor bronze (9.2), while Kenzie Martinez took seventh all-around.
More improvement came from locals Mihret Lynch and Neha Dinesh-Kumar, who was third on floor (9.125) and eighth all-around.
Ruffians softball
The Davis Ruffians, a U8 fall softball team, dropped a pair of recent games against Rocklin, 6-0 and 5-2.
Despite not hitting in Game 1, the locals got strong pitching contributions from Katie Dowling (three strikeouts) and Cloe Lamoureux, who fanned two. Kiana Giomi helped out when she caught a fly ball to turn an unassisted double play.
Finally, in the fourth inning of the nightcap, the Ruffians’ bats came alive as Cloe and Lea Lamoureux each singled and scored the two Davis runs.
The runs came home on a double by Giomi and a single from Rylan Sull, who also doubled.
Dowling struck out three more batters during her time in the circle, while Cloe Lamoureux made a couple of nice defensive plays.
