The Davis AC Milan, a U15 boys soccer team, was one shootout goal away from winning the recent Santa Clara Sporting International tournament, settling for a strong second-place finish.

In their first game, the locals defeated highly ranked Juventus, 3-1, as Ricky Gonzales opened the Davis scoring and Cameron Peuse added the other two tallies. Facing Diablo FC later that day, AC Milan was trailing late when Jovanni Morales calmly sent a free kick past the Diablo keeper to clinch a valuable 1-1 tie.

Needing only a tie to move on, Davis’ defense — paced by Buddhika Ratnasiri, Kyle Cuvelier, Jaleel Dmeiri and Bobby Scott — took over in its third contest, not allowing Santa Clara a single scoring opportunity in a 0-0 deadlock.

The local offense proved it was just as powerful in the quarterfinals as Camilo Rodriguez’s hat trick led the way in a 5-0 victory over the Huntington Beach Untouchables. Other AC Milan scoring came when Gonzales twisted in a goal from outside the box and Dan Shuman converted on a penalty kick.

Davis then got tallies from Peuse and Rodriguez to defeat Pajaro Valley, 2-0, in the semis. The local offense also got a jolt from Sammy Walker, keeper Roberto Ortiz made several fine stops and Santiago Moreno, Isaiah Alba and Sam Elmwood ruled the midfield.

That set up a finals rematch with Diablo FC, a contest that found neither team able to find the net in regulation or overtime. In the shootout, Morales, Scott, Rodriguez and Dmeiri converted penalty kicks, but Diablo won by a goal.
