Davis Diamonds gymnastics got events wins from Emma Rebhun (on vault) and Alexandra Lee (beam) as part of a strong team performance at the Junior Olympic Level 3 North State Championships last weekend in Rohnert Park.
Rebhun’s vault gold helped her take silver in the all-around, while Lee and Alannah Griesemer each captured all-around bronze medals. Lee’s state title in the beam was the second for her family in as many weeks as Vivian Lee won gold at Level 4.
Among the youngest Level 3 gymnasts, Davis’ Sofia Patriquin tied her best floor score ever (9.1) to take fifth place there and finished 10th all-around in her first state meet. Also making her state championship debut was Sophia Koehler, whose dynamic vault earned a 9.5 and was good for a silver medal on that event. She was 12th all-around in Child D.
Diamonds gymnast Bethany McElhern used a strong fourth-place floor performance to take 10th all-around in Child E.
Competing in a loaded Child F division, Lee vaulted to sixth (9.35), was ninth on bars (9.025) and added a floor bronze (9.425) to her beam win (9.375) on her way to a 37.175 all-around score. Teammate Anissa Morgan also performed well, using a seventh-place finish on bars (9.1) and an eighth-place floor routine to finish ninth all-around.
In Child H, two other state championships debutantes, Anabelle Navarro (13th all-around) and Sarah Bennetts (15th), showed lots of talent and promise for the locals.
The Junior session featured Davis rookie Ava Guistino vaulting to a personal-best 9.15 to take seventh and using a dynamic floor routine to finish sixth. Griesemer started her first state meet with a fourth-place vault (9.375), then took fifth on bars, fourth on beam and won bronze for an elegant floor exercise (9.25). Her all-around score of 36.325 was good for third place.
Charlotte Stevens posted a promising performance at Junior C, finishing 14th all-around.
In Junior D, Rebhun combined her vault win (9.425) and bars silver (9.15) with a fourth-place finish on beam and a fifth on floor for second place all-around. Teammate Fiona Adamczewski overcame early struggles to take eighth on bars and 13th all-around.
Another Diamonds gymnast to start slow and finish strong was Haylee Aquino, who was fourth on beam, then won silver on floor (9.425) to capture fourth place in the all-around. Teammate Lily Rigor finished excellent fifth on beam and 11th all-around.
In Junior F, Davis’ Kathleen Sheridan had the meet of her life, starting with a tremendous 9.325 vault, good for fifth. She also was seventh on bars, third on beam (9.025) and sixth on floor (9.225) to total 36.475 and take fourth place in the all-around. Good performances by Chloe Nelson on bars (sixth) and beam (ninth) put her 12th all-around.
Maren McGuire was the Diamonds’ lone Senior performer and was solid, earning sixth on vault (9.225) and seventh on bars (9.1) on her way to ninth place in the all-around.
Firestorm soccer
The Firestorm, a U10 girls soccer team with players from Davis and the surrounding area, recently finished second in the NorCal State Cup Platinum Division.
The locals earned a spot in the championship game by defeating Central Marin in a thrilling game settled on penalty kicks. The Firestorm defense — led by Amanda Berry, Julia Thomson and Shea Sorrentino — was relentless, while keepers Alee Holman-Evans and Lili Skilling worked hard to stop shots on goal during four quarters and two overtime periods of scoreless soccer.
In an exciting shootout, local Skylar Schouten served as keeper, blocking two shots, and put in the deciding goal herself.
The scoreless soccer continued in the championship as the Firestorm and Almaden FC finished regulation in a 0-0 tie. Still, the local offense provided constant pressure behind Chloe Bell, Gabi McGahan, Jaedyn Alford and Nayeli Carpio.
In addition, Soraya Fattahi paced a strong group of Firestorm midfielders.
Almaden, however, won in sudden-death overtime when a goal ricocheted in.
