Youth roundup: Red Bulls rally for a tournament win

The Davis Red Bulls, a U10 boys soccer team, used a recommitment to teamwork at last weekend’s Sonoma Puma Harvest Cup, and the balanced performance resulted in four straight wins and a tournament championship.

Working together to bring home the title were Davis’ Zevik Citron, Cameron DeMasi, Teagan Favorite, Jerry Godfryd, Jackson Isadore, Daniel Jauregui, Elan Kalman, Eliot Liederman, Kai Moore, Ledger Petracek, Sepp Sanchirico, Ty Soderquist and Tyler Venner.

Heat soccer

The Davis Heat played well in an encounter with Juventus Avanza last weekend, falling 3-2.

After giving up an early Juventus tally, the locals attacked the goal looking to respond. The playmaking of Sophia Hernandez and Olivia Haass created the chances and Davis shots came from Jaha McClean, Brooke Rosenblum and Alexia Moore.

Though the Heat hadn’t yet found the net, Renee Schuman, Melissa Teuber, Madison Nicholas, Claire Dicker, Hannah Thompson, Elexsis Valenzuela and goalkeeper Christina Roeckl-Navazio provided solid defense, while Mikayla Vang, Kaitlyn Wagner, Sofia Evanoff and Kristen Ward controlled the middle, keeping the game close.

Finally, just after halftime, Hernandez tied things up with a nice kick over the Avanza keeper. But, despite several key saves by local goalie Lyla Godfryd, two quick goals put Davis down 3-1.

Near the end of the game, Suleikha Sutter scored a Heat goal, off an assist from Teuber, but it wasn’t enough.

Tsunami softball

The Davis Tsunami, a U10 softball team playing NorCal Fastpitch Winterball, split a doubleheader with Nevada County Nitro on Sunday at Slide Hill Park.

The locals won the opener, 11-8, behind strong pitching from Madison Rutherford and Surina Beal and powerful plate performances by Layla Fitch, LaSiya Earnest and Bella Hyder.

The visitors came back to nip Davis, 9-8, in the nightcap, despite careful circle work from Hyder and Fitch, who finished with three strikeouts.

Fitch also blasted a triple and a single, while Shelby Harry and Earnest posted two hits apiece. Beal and Earnest added outstanding defensive play for the Tsunami.

Pee Wee basketball

The city of Davis is now taking registration for its Pee Wee Basketball Program, which is designed for first-time players in first and second grades.

Basketball fundamentals, teamwork, sportsmanship and fun will be emphasized at three sessions, all held on Saturdays at the DHS gym. The cost is $55 per child and includes a T-shirt.

The first session offered is Oct. 13 through Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to noon. Two sessions (10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.) will run Nov. 10 through Dec. 8.

For more information, contact Lori Conrad at 530-753-7731 or [email protected], or visit www.cityofdavis.org.

Adult basketball

The city of Davis is accepting sign-ups for its adult basketball leagues. The season begins Monday, Nov. 5., with registration taken through Friday, Oct. 19.

The fee for the 10- to 12-game season is $520 to $624 per team. Register at the Community Services Department, 600 A St., Suite C, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
