The Davis Barcelona, a U15 boys soccer team, had to settle for second place at last weekend’s Stanford Summer Classic tournament, despite allowing just one goal in four games.
In its first game, Barcelona blanked the Livermore Fusion, 1-0, on a late, long-range goal by Chris Johnson.
Later that day, in a 2-0 win over the Stanford FC Vortex, Luis Ramos opened the Davis scoring on a rebound off a Jorge Rocha-Figueroa shot that hit the crossbar. Johnson scored the second goal.
Ramos tallied two more times and had an assist in the locals’ next outing, a 3-0 victory over Danville. Sam Curren provided offensive pressure for Barcelona, Jonathan Lovely had a goal and Rocha-Figueroa’s cross set up one of the scores.
The trio of shutouts, secured by strong defensive work from Johnson, Michael Vernau, Eliot Williams, Alex Hill, Brandon Hein and keeper Matt Hill, earned Davis a spot in the finals, where it met Marin FC.
There, Barcelona fell 1-0 despite strong offensive effort from Marco Rocha-Rigueroa, Tomás Echiburu and Jackson Looney.
The Davis Lightning, a U11 boys soccer team, kick-started its season by placing second in the Cassy Rowe Benefit tournament last weekend in Sacramento.
The Lightning won its first game in convincing fashion, dispatching the Prospector Cobras, 3-1, behind striker Cavan Schraner’s one goal and one assist.
After a disappointing loss to the Davis Alliance Arsenal in the second match, Davis rebounded with a scrappy 2-1 win against the Elk Grove Heat. Goals in that match by striker Jaiden Temple and midfielder Keenan Busse, who also had a critical assist, put the Lightning in the tournament’s championship contest.
There, a rematch with the Arsenal had a similar result as the Lightning’s early lead could not hold up in a 5-1 loss.
Throughout the event, Davis got key defensive contributions from Carson Whitehead, Ethan Schroeder, Jacob Perez, Nathan McAllister and goalie Neil Smith. Joshua Faith, Conner Clark and Kean Deas also played well.
