The Davis Mojo, a U14 boys soccer team, won the title at the Comstock Shootout in Carson City last weekend.

After an easy 4-0 win over Pleasant Hill, Davis moved on to its key battle of the tournament against Bishop, where it won 2-1. Bunky Hampton scored the first goal of that game, off an assist from Raunak Manandhar, who then scored off an assist by Ricky Houck. J.J. Granda led Mojo defensively.

In the semifinals, Davis beat the Mt. Diablo Diablos, 2-1, behind two more Manandhar goals in the closing minutes.

Mojo then defeated Mt. Diablo United, 4-0, in the championship game, using great saves by Mac Meershiedt to secure the shutout. Nathan Leyva assisted Manandhar on one of the goals.

The entire Davis squad, most notably Jake Guerrero, Jeremy Jaquinod, Andrew Borchers and Liam Mayr, demonstrated gritty play throughout. Manandhar scored nine of Mojo’s 12 goals, while the defense, led by sweeper Alec Farboud and Meerschiedt at goalie, allowed just two opponent scores through the tournament.

Inferno

The Davis Inferno, a U14 boys team, went undefeated in the Comstock Shootout last weekend, tying two games and winning one.

Davis tied the Carson City Demons, 2-2, in its first game. Murtaza Khan started out the Inferno scoring off an assist by Jonathon Jones. Robert May then drew a foul in the last few seconds of the game, allowing setting up a William Stukas goal. Despite solid goaltending by Kevin Riley and John Carson, however, and a sure goal saved away by Thomas Oide, the Demons were able to equalize.

Against MDSA United, Davis once again fought to a 2-2 draw. Otto Nichols scored both goals for the Inferno off assists by Alex Unger and Jones. Ryan Tinsley, Barrett George, Khan, Daniel Tsang, Justin McGrew and Nick Bachand played excellent defense in the tie.

In its final game of the tournament, Davis shut out the PHMSA Clash, 6-0. Ryan Quinn started off the scoring, using a Bachand assist. Jones and Stukas added two goals each for the Inferno, while Nichols had one. Riley and Carson played in goal, making numerous saves, and McGrew, Oide, Tinsley and Tsang led the team defensively with great midfield support from Unger, George and May.

Oide won his division of the Keeper Wars, an individual goalie contest on Saturday night.

AC Milan

AC Milan, a U13 boys team, picked up a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the California Odyssey on Saturday.

Milan started well as Cameron Peuse finished a long run down the left side with a powerful goal. Minutes later, Matteo Sorrentino placed a free kick that the keeper could only knock down and Jovanni Morales put it in the back of the net.

Buddhika Ratnasari and Ryan Strong led the AC Milan defense, which gave up only one late goal, while Dan Shuman and Isaiah Alba anchored the midfield.

Daredevils

The Davis Daredevils, a U12 boys team, competed in the Carson City tournament last weekend.

In their first game, the Daredevils tied Truckee Storm, 0-0. Great runs by Josh Harjes and Collin Drown came up empty for Davis, but strong goalkeeping by Jack Premizic kept the Storm from scoring throughout the game.

The Daredevils fell, 6-2, to the PHMSA Voltage in Game 2. Collin Drown and Josh Premizic scored the Davis goals, with Premizic’s coming off an assist from Eben Kohn. Keeper Wesley Romer played well in the loss.

In their third game of the tournament, the Daredevils lost to the Mt. Diablo Sentinals, 3-2. Romer and Harjes scored the two goals for Davis, with Jack Premizic posting an assist. Drown led the Daredevils defensively, while keeper Scott Korinke limited the opponents’ scoring.

United

The Davis Legacy United, a U11 boys team, posted a 4-3 win over the Rage Academy Strikers on Saturday.

Tyson Duncan started the scoring for Davis off an assist by Jonah Henrickson. Before the end of the first half, however, the Strikers had equalized at  1-1. Matthew Martinez and Ethan Park provided valuable attacking play for United before the break.

After the Strikers took a 3-1 lead in the second half, Davis’ Giacomo Sorrentino and Zade Alafranji both scored to tie the game. Alafranji later scored the winning goal, booting home a pass from Arturo Brenes. Ryan Hulbert, Aaron Mayr, Henrickson and keeper Jacob Rosenthal led  United’s defense, remaining tough and thwarting late Stricker runs to secure the win.

Dynasty

The Davis Dynasty, a U12 girls team, continued their winning streak with four victories in the Pleasant Hill tournament last weekend before falling in the championship game too take second place.

Davis opened with a 4-0 win over the Extreme, with goals coming from Sophia De Runtz and Alyssa Lengtat. Dynasty’s defense also played an incredible game with Lexi Kornblum and Amanda Nazario creating a solid wall of defense.

Dynasty shut out Pleasant Hill next, behind scoring from Lengtat and De Runtz. Samantha Moore assisted on both goals in the 2-0 win. Taylor Ziccardi was huge on defense, contributing to the win with consistently powerful kicks that sent the ball into the attack zone.

Davis beat the Walnut Creek Fire, 2-1, in Game 3. Moore and De Runtz both had goals, while Lengtat had an assist.

Dynasty faced off against a local rival, the Dynamite, in the fourth game, and won 2-0. Goalies Anna Sincavage and Kate Meerscheidt were instrumental in the shutout and Dynasty’s first goal was on a follow through by Lengtat in the penalty box. Dynasty scored again on a power shot by Moore.

The victory put Dynasty in the championship against the Vortex. Moore scored the lone goal for the locals, but Dynasty eventually fell 2-1. Siena Dwyer, Shailah Arreola-Bitner, Mia Skaggs, Hanah Wyman and Anna Sincavage all kept constant pressure on the Vortex goal.

Dynamite

The Davis Dynamite, a U12 girls team, split four games in Pleasant Hill at the SoccerFest tournament last weekend.

In its first game, Davis defeated the Pleasant Hill Inferno, 4-0, behind goals by Aliya Hirzy, Sophia Sears, Bryn Wieking and Mary-Camille Lovely. Dynamite saw great passing from Julia Kelsch, Addie O’Hanlon and Willa Moffatt, who all assisted on the goals.

In its second game, Davis beat the Mountain View Ice Breakers, 3-1. Lovely scored the first Dynamite goal off an assist by Kelsch, then Sears put the locals ahead with a breakaway run. Anna Riesenberg scored the third goal on a rebound after Julia Lovely dribbled the ball through the Ice Breaker defense.

Dynamite, however, was sent to the consolation bracket after semifinal loss to the Davis Dynasty. Dynamite delivered a strong defensive effort led by Emily Talbert and Nina Langley, and long throw-ins by Talbert and great passing by O’Hanlon created opportunities for the offense, which pressured Dynasty throughout the game.

Dynamite lost its consolation game, 3-0 to Pleasant Hill United.

Azzurri

The Davis Legacy Azzurri, a U12 girls team, defeated the Vacaville Thunderbirds, 5-1, on Saturday.

In the first half, Tiffany Miras scored the first goal for Davis, off an assist from Hunter Petracek. Maggie Whittemore assisted Gaby Herrera for the second goal, and Alex Diaz scored before halftime for Azzurri, off an assist by Petracek.

The locals led 3-1 at intermission before Herrera started play in the second half by tallying another goal off an assist by Miras. Diaz finished off the scoring when she put in a Julia Curtis assist. In a great overall performance by the Azzurri, the midfield of Bethany Gen, Jada Macairan and Herrera were able to control the game from the start with smart decisions and strong passing.

Voodoo

The Davis Voodoo, a U12 girls team, posted a 0-2-1 record at the Pleasant Hill SoccerFest tournament.

In the first game, Taylor Kitchen and Sarah Zaragoza-Smith provided plenty of offensive spark, but it wasn’t enough as Voodoo lost, 1-0, to the Mountain View Team Red.

Baily Ringer, Paxson Danzer and Laura Young played strong defense for Davis in Game 2, but Voodoo fell, 2-0, to Pleasant Hill United.

Davis managed a 3-3 tie with the Palo Alto Electric Shock in its final game, using goals by Jasmine Brayton, Kelly Ostrom and Grace Mariano. Voodoo keepers Julia Alali and Sarah Thompson each recorded several saves and contributed one assist apiece.

Stampede

The Davis Stampede, a U10 girls team, continued league play last weekend at the Davis Legacy Fields, playing to a 0-0 tie with the El Dorado United Eclipse Luna on Saturday.

But after another tie in the first game of NorCal Play Date No. 2, a round-robin tournament hosted by Sonoma County on Sunday, the Davis stampede really started.

The Stampede dominated the Sonoma County Alliance North, 10-1, in Game 2. Emily Speakman led the Davis scoring with four goals, followed by McKenna Lutzker with two. Sydney Moore, Sophie Karperos (who had the only goal in the 1-1 tie against Sacramento United Extreme Red in Game 1), Yasmeen Dmeiri and Alexandra Hanna each scored one. Olivia Smith, Dmeiri’s and Anne Ayotte had assists against Sonoma, while Kaitlyn McElhern and Grace Carlson powered a tough Stampede defense.

Davis had an equally impressive performance in its final game, beating the formidable Santa Rosa Waves, 5-1. Karperos and Byrne had two goals each for the Stampede, while Adeline Umphress had the final score of the game.

Danger

The Davis Danger, a U10 girls team, took first place in the Pleasant Hill Soccerfest Tournament last weekend, winning all of their five games.

In its first game of the tournament, Davis beat the Mt. Diablo Strikers, 5-2, with Grace Bosco scoring all five goals. Danger faced the Strikers again in the semifinals, shutting them out, 4-0, with Taylor Trinidad leading the way.

In the title game, the Danger posted a 6-0 win over another Davis team, the Lightning. Gillian Ruhe and Jillian Fahey led Danger offensively in that contest, making key plays to help clinch the victory.

Alexis Soloaga, Shay Shaffer, Fahey and  Bosco led a Danger offense that scored 26 goals on the weekend and Skye Shaffer, Alana Curtis and Laurel Krovetz were great on the defensive side. Keepers Alana Curtis, Shaffer, Krovetz and Leah Pinto allowed just three goals throughout the weekend.
