Youth soccer: Mojo falls into an Inferno

During a matchup of two Davis teams last weekend at the Pleasant Hill Soccerfest, Davis Damage midfielder Kelsey Dedoshka, middle, sends the ball to the offense, while being backed up by teammates Natalie Ho and AJ Farrens, far background. Inferno and Mojo, two Davis U14 boys soccer teams, battled it out for the third time this season on Sunday, with Inferno coming back to win 3-2.

After Mojo scored first, Otto Nichols evened the score at 1-1 by volleying in the deflection off a shot from William Stukas in the first half.

Inferno’s John Carson jumped on another deflected shot in the second half, delivered this time by Thomas Oide, and again tied the score. Nichols scored the winning shot for Inferno off a Nick Bachand assist.

Jonathon Jones and Murtaza Khan, among others, played well as they helped Inferno maintain ball possession.

Red Crew

The Davis Red Crew, a U15 boys team, completed its State Cup quest and its 2010-11 season with a 3-2 loss to the Placer Blues at Playfields, in a contest decided by a game-ending shootout.

Youcef Rezagui scored both of the Davis goals.

Throughout the season Crew goalies Andres Olmedo and Matthew Linvil along with backs Adam Cunning, Matthew Nemeth, Rami Rashmawi and Shane Pesis led a stubborn defense that stymied opponents. Mid-fielders Ian Soffos, Ken Hashimoto and Isaiah Jimenez, along with wings Alex Raya, Paul Hinton, Antonio Rodriguez and Avery Lascher-Posner, controlled mid-field play and initiated attacks and counterattacks. Forwards Rezagui, Brian Blake and Alex Perez provided much of the firepower for the team.

Canaries

The Davis Canaries, a U19 girls team, went 3-0 to take the title at the Pleasant Hill Soccerfest Tournament last weekend.

In the Canaries’ first game, Miriam Bell scored two goals and Gretchen Huston added a third to give Davis a 3-1 win over Concord.

Later Saturday, the Canaries amassed six goals and shut out Pleasant Hill. Huston scored twice and Elizabeth Lawson, Malia Fujisawa, Katie Engel, and Bell each scored one. Lisa Bell and Elise Adams added assists in the game.

On Sunday, the Canaries faced another Davis team, the Damage, and escaped with a narrow win when Fujisawa was scored the match’s only goal when she was awarded a penalty kick on a late tripping call.

Goalkeepers Meredith Conrad-Forest and Sammy Houck directed the Canaries’ defense for much of the tournament, while Esther Wu, Dee Milbrodt, Erin Leary, Sydnie Saechow, Linda Wogulis, Megan Bacchini and Maddie Yeaman defended and organized the team’s attacks.

Damage

The Davis Damage, a U19 girls team, was the runner-up at the Pleasant Hill Soccerfest last weekend, falling to the Davis Canaries in the final game.

On Saturday morning, Damage defeated the host Blue Angels, 4-0. Allison Loux scored twice for the locals and Cassie Cala and A.J. Farrens contributed one goal each. Midfielders Kelsey Dedoshka and Lauren Kim provided many opportunities to the offensive lines.

In Game 2, Davis beat the Concord Mob, 2-1, on two quick goals by Natalie Ho in the last 10 minutes of the contest. Emily Brown, Sze-Sze Chan and Megan Whitworth all had shots on goal.

On Sunday, Damage faced-off with the Canaries, and lost 1-0 on a late PK. Defenders Amy Rasgdale, Tiffany McMurtry and Sheila Pollard, together with keepers Catherine Ho and Lea Snow conceded no goals during regular play.

Davis Impact

The Davis Impact, a U16 girls team, won all three of their games to claim first place at the Soccerfest tournament in Pleasant Hill last weekend.

In its first game, Impact beat Mount Diablo, 2-1, with Sarah Pinto and Ju-A Son scoring the two Davis goals. Emmanuelle Cordier posted an assist.

In that game, the Impact defense led by keepers Margaret Lawson, Shelby Ziccardi, Jessica Yeo and Stephanie Doss and sweeper Jennifer Gold allowed the only goal they would give up all weekend.

Davis then overpowered Pleasant Hill-Martinez, 3-0, later Saturday. Mariah Ferris opened the scoring with a bullet inside the near post after a solo run down the right side. Allie Pemzic and Pinto contributed the next two Impact goals.

On Sunday morning, Davis came on strong in the second half to beat the MVLA Adrenaline, 2-0. Saves in the opening period from keeper Lawson kept the shutout and Pinto and Alice Renaud scored the Davis goals, one on an assist from.
