VACAVILLE — Keating Park was anything but kind to the Davis Little League 11-12 all-stars on Sunday.
In elimination games of the District 64 Tournament, the local American squad dropped a 17-9 decision to Vacaville National, while Davis National was upended, 6-4, by Woodland American.
“The boys fought really hard,” DNLL coach Steve Holm said afterward. “They had chances every inning. It’s tough when you leave 12 runners on. We just couldn’t get that big hit when we needed it.
“Unfortunately the players are taking it hard because they love baseball and looked forward to going far.”
After one frame, the Nationals trailed 3-2. At the end of four innings, the deficit was 6-2 — but the locals chipped away, scoring single runs in each of the final two innings.
Tyler Gibson went 2-for-4 for DNLL, while Griffin Duisenberg, Sam Goidell, Jack Riley and Peter Frame also had hits.
In Davis American’s game, an eight-run first inning for VNLL sealed the deal, but the locals kept battling back.
Ben Easton and Sean Finerty led off innings with homers and Christian Lein (two singles and an RBI), Chris Roque (RBI double), Austin Griffiths (RBI single) and Jack Hoal (a run batted in) all contributed offensively.
As the season ends for both Davis squads, Holm talked about his team:
“They played great and they were really fun to work with. An awesome team to coach. Frank Lagatutta and Tyler Gibson were great to coach with.
“For nine of them, it was their last Little League game. I’m looking forward to watching them play high school … they are a talented bunch of guys.”
