Youth roundup: Davis U17 squad wins Disney Showcase

The Davis Legacy 95s, a U17 girls soccer, team made the most of a trip to the Disney Soccer Showcase, capturing a title at the prestigious event with a final match win on Tuesday.

The tournament, played at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, FL., is regarded as one of the top youth soccer gatherings in the nation.

In the championship contest, Davis topped the Chicago Botofogo, 3-0, behind a pair of goals from Ellie Boon and one score by Zuzu Romano.

A pair of shutout wins in group play — 3-0 over the Michigan Hawks and 2-0 against the Tampa Bay United — put the locals in the title match, despite a 1-0 loss to FC Copa.

Excellent play all tournament long by center midfielder Makenzie Delaughder was key for Davis, while Boon and Romano finished with three goals each.

“I am very proud of this group; we had excellent chemistry through the week and were rewarded with a very nice victory in the end,” said Davis coach Mark Torguson, who noted that two other local teams had good showings at the event.

The Davis Legacy 94s, a U19 boys squad, managed a third-place finish and the Davis Legacy 97s, a U15 boys team, took fourth.
