Playing in the first weekend of the recent Pacific Zone’s Fall Speedo Cup League, the Davis Water Polo Club’s girls eighth grade and under squad finished a strong 2-1 in intermediate division play at Marin College’s Indian Valley Campus.

In their first match, the locals fell 10-4 to the San Ramon 680 Drivers. Despite the loss, the Davis side got good play from Katrina Sturm, Moira Williams, Kinsey Van Deynze and Karina Hunt.

Next, DWPC outscored Marin Sleepy Hollow Aquatics, 11-4, behind strong offensive performances from Julie Zoanobini, Maggie Oys and Annie Fullerton.

In their final match of the day, the locals surged ahead early to defeat Stanford C, 15-3. Playing solid on both ends of the pool in that game were Marcela Cardenas and Megan Femling.

DYSA 14U softball

The Davis Youth Softball Association’s 14U fall softball team recently took both ends of a doubleheader, topping Lincoln 8-2 and then 13-6.

In the first game, Rachel Demarco teamed with catcher Alex Ewing to pitch four great innings, allowing just one run and striking out nine. Brittany Eggers came on in the fifth to close things out, recording one strikeout. Offensively, the locals broke through with three runs in the third inning, then pulled away by scoring five times in the fourth.

In the third, a hit by Mickey Cross and walks earned by Shasta Fields and Anya Mchugh were key to the rally. The bottom half of the inning featured great infield defense by Cross, first baseman Shelby Bernauer, shortstop Dominique Sommer and third baseman Sara Wixon.

The fourth inning began with Shelby Harwood’s bunt putting so much pressure on the defense that she ended up scoring and the five-run frame also featured a walk by Haleigh Holgate.

Offense was the key for Davis in the nightcap, including a first-inning double by Shalah Arreola and a two-run single by Zoe Johnson.

DYSA 10U softball

The Davis Bad Blues, a 10U fall softball team, played two exciting games in a Sunday doubleheader in Loomis, eventually splitting against Five Cities.

After falling behind 12-2 in Game 1, the locals stormed back to win 15-14 in extra innings. The second contest was also a high-scoring affair with Davis falling, 16-15.

Over the course of the two games, Surina Beal — who also pitched — went 3-for-3 with a double and six stolen bases. Another pitcher, Grace Harrison, smacked a single, had three walks and stole two bases, as well as turning a nice double play in the field.

Other offensive standouts for Davis were Alyssa Yee (3-for-4), Kendall Martinez (2-for-2, 3 steals), Emma Dean (3-for-4) ,Gabby Keller (2 doubles, 2 walks) and Alicia Thoe (2-for-4). In addition, Lizzy Jones belted a solid single and a stole a base, Bianca Seed had a good eye, earning four walks, and swiped two bases.

On defense, Jazmin Roberts, Emily Mentink and Maddie Tomasello all excelled behind the plate. Mentink had the defensive play of the day when she charged a hard line drive to left field and making a knee-high catch.
